| Reading Strategies
We have a common language among grade levels to help the students
become more successful at reading. Some of this language includes:
Background Knowledge(BK): Reader's naturally make connections between their
lives and the stories that they read. Using BK assists the reader in reading
comprehension. Connections may be made with Text to Self, Text to Text, Text
to Others, and Text to World.
Questioning: Children are naturally inquisitive. They are constantly asking
questions. We need to help children create their own questions before, during
and after they read.
Sensory Images: When reading, children can create a movie in their heads. This
includes the senses of touch, taste, smell, sound as well as pictures.
Determining Importance of Text (WOW! Facts): Students decide what facts are
important and necessary to understand what they are reading.
Inferences: As readers, children make predctions and draw conclusions about
the text.
Synthesizing: Drawing on your knowledge of what you have read and utilizing
all of the strategies to better understand the text.
