Earth Super Heroes 2012
Arting with Meleanna Meyer
Funded by a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation On Culture and the Arts, Artists in the Schools program, the second graders are working with well-known artist, Meleanna Meyer to learn elements and principles of art, and to create original pieces.
With "Kumu Mele's" guidance, students used art principles, such as space and composition, to practice observational drawings.
Students learned to draw realistic self-portraits using mirrors and observational skills. "Before and after" sketches show their growth after a single lesson with Kumu Mele.
Final self-portraits will accompany students' auto-biographical writing pieces.
Meeting Science Standards on Earth Day
Earth Day, April 22nd, always falls in the 4th quarter of school and is a perfect time to address science standard SC2.8.2
"Identify the limited supply of natural resources and how they may be extended through conservation, reuse, and recycling".
A fun part of our learning unit was for each student to create an Earth Day Superhero who helps to save the planet.
Many children chose to be superheroes who helped people conserve water or energy, while others created superheroes to help stop polluting and littering. Still other students wanted to be superheroes who encouraged people to recycle metal or plastic. All our young superheroes created super powers to mete out harsh consequences to those "Earth Day Villains" who did not mend their Earth-harming ways.
