KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL
ATTENDANCE PROGRAM
SY 2007-2008
COMPONENTS
Number of Absences Allowed - Each semester, students are allowed four (4)
absences per class. At Kauai High School, students attend 90-minute classes
in an A/B block schedule. No distinctions are made between excused and
unexcused absences, and no notes are required. Absences may be due to
medical appointments, common ailments, late transportation, family events,
or personal situations that keep students from attending school.
Tardies - Three (3) tardies to the same class are equivalent to one (1)
absence.
Authorized School Activities -
* Students will not be considered absent if they are participating in
authorized school activities including, not liminted to: field trips,
athletic events, student government meetings, rehearsals, or performances.
* Students will not be considered absent if they are meeting with a
counselor or an administrator or are receiving special services.
Parent Notification Process -
* Pre-recorded absence notifications calls are made daily to the student's
residence.
* When a student is absent from a class four (4) times in a semester, the
Attendance Coordinator (AC) mails a Notification Letter to the
parent/guardian. The letter states that, in order to earn credit for that
class, the student must make up any future absences by attending the After
School Attendance Program (ASAP).
* At the end of the quarter, teachers record a grade of "K" for the quarter
and the semester if a student has missed more than four (4) classes and has
not made them up in the After School Attendance Program (ASAP). A grade
of "K" is equivalent to an "F".
Appeal Process
* If there are extenuating circumstances for more than four (4) absences per
class (such as hospital stays, surgery, or a death in the family), the
student should file an appeal with the Appeals Committee. Apeal forms can
be obtained at the Front Office or the Attendance Office. Completed appeal
forms should be submitted to the Attendance Coordinator with supporting
documentation, such as a doctor's note. Family vacations are never
considered on appeal.
* The Appeals Committee is composed of the Attendance Coordinator and at
least three (3) members of the administration, faculty, or staff.
* Decisions of the Appeals Committee are final.
After School Attendance (ASAP)
* ASAP is a strictly monitored study hall held on campus from 3:00 - 6:00
p.m. Students can make up two class periods in one ASAP session. Students
with only one class to make up are dismissed at 4:30 p.m.
* Transportation to and from the After School Attendance Program (ASAP) is
the responsibility of students and their parents/guardians.
* To be admitted to the ASAP, students must be on time and must present a
Notification Letter signed by a parent/guardian.
* The student attending the ASAP must have with him/her all required
materials to complete the lessons for the class missed. It is the student's
responsibility to bring and complete the lessons. If the student completed
or does not have assignments from the missed classes, he/she will complete
the 7 Habits of Proficient Readers using Newsweek magazine or other reading
materials.
* To earn a certificate of attendance for a class period, students must be
present for 90 minutes and must comply with ASAP rules.
4 Absences (3 Tardies = 1 Absence)-----> ASAP 3-6 p.m.
