behind-the-wheel driving.
SCHEDULE = After school and weekends. Schedule to be announced by the
instructor. Students who are selected for a session should not make any

expected to adhere to the schedule.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION (NEW POLICY STARTING DECEMBER 16, 2002)
*Applies to all applications turned in, on or after December 16, 2002
Because of the overwhelming response for the Kauai High School's Driver
Education Program, students must attach a copy of their valid student's
driver permit and a self-addressed stamped envelope to a Completed Driver
Education Application in order to be placed on the wait list. Students will
be placed on the wait list in the order that their completed application,
attached self-addressed stamped envelope and copy of their student's driver
permit are received. If an application is turned in incomplete, without a
photocopy of a valid student driver's permit, self-addressed envelope or
missing information the student application will not be placed on the wait
list. The self-addressed stamped envelope will be used to mail the
applicant's acceptance letter to the Kauai High School Driver Education
Program when the applicant officially makes the next available class.
Applications can be picked up from the Kauai High School's Main Office,
Mondays through Fridays, from 7:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. except holidays.

CERTIFICATION
(Non-credit course.) Certificates awarded for satisfactory completion of 30
hours classroom and 6 hours behind-the-wheel instruction. Student's
permanent record will show satisfactory completion of course. This course
does not qualify the student for a driver's license.

STUDENT-PARENT OBLIGATIONS
Once behind-the-wheel instruction is limited to 6 hours, students are
expected to practice driving skills under the supervision of
parents/guardians. Traffic citations incurred during *behind-the wheel
training are the responsibility of the student driver. *Regular attendance
is mandatory. Absences will subject the student to non-certification.

ENROLLMENT AND FEE
The fee is $10.00. To be placed on the waiting list, please completely fill
out the application form, attach a photocopy of your Hawaii Permit, a self-
addressed stamped envelope and turn it into the Driver Education Box located
at the Kauai High School Front Office. The self-addressed stamped envelope
will be used to mail your acceptance letter to the Kauai High School Driver
Education Program when you officially make the next available class.

WHY SHOULD YOU ENROLL IN DRIVER EDUCATION?
Learning how to drive right from the start is important. Quality driver
education provided by certified professional driver education teachers is
the best way to learn this lifelong skill. Here are more reasons:

SAFETY FIRST
There are a lot of unsafe drivers on the road. Driver education is designed
to produce safe efficient drivers. Our driver education teachers will keep
you safe. In addition, all driver education cars are equipped with dual
control brakes, located on the front passenger side. This allows the
instructors to use them when needed to ensure safety on the road at all
times.

STRESS-FREE LEARNING
Learning to drive is often just as stressful on the teacher as it is on the
student, especially if the teacher happens to be your parent, sibling, or
best friend. Avoid arguements and fights, which add stress to your life at
home or with friends. Learn from a driver education teacher, trained to
help you learn without the additional stress.

LOW COST
The Department of Education cost for driver education is only $10 for 30
hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours behind-the-wheel. Save your
family added expense.

JOBS
Many jobs in Hawaii require that you have a driver's license. The driver
education program will help prepare you for jobs that may require driving
skills.

ROAD TEST PREPARATION
Our behind-the-wheel training prepares you for the road test by helping you
feel comfortable riding with an instructor. You should feel more relaxed
during your road test because you have experienced riding with an instructor.

DID YOU KNOW.....high teen fatalities on our highways are due to
inexperience driving, speeding and lack of seat belt
use?.............alcohol-related traffic crashes is the leading killer of
teens between the ages of 15 and 19?........if 50% of traffic deaths are due
to alcohol-related crashes, then 50% of the deaths are due to "something
else"?..........if 10% of reported crashes are alcohol-related, then 90% are
due to "something else"?..........if 25% or less of drivers involved in
fatal crashes are intoxicated, then 75% and more are not
intoxicated......then "something else" caused their crash?........if 38% or
less of fatally injured drivers are intoxicated, then 62% and more drivers
are not intoxicated then "something else" caused their crash?
