HISTORY OF KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL
On April 30, 1913, The Governor of the Territory of Hawai'i signed into
law Act 160 to establish "the Kauai High School." The courthouse was
located on a four-acre parcel atop a hill often referred to as "Ke Kuhiau",
which translates as "high point." The area was once the site of "Ke
Kuhiau", on of three heiaus located near Kalapaki Bay. On September 14,
1914, Kauai High School opened its doors in the renovated courthouse as the
fifth high school of the Territory of Hawai'i and the first high school on
the island of Kaua'i.

VISION FOR KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL
Our students will be prepared for the challenges of their future by becoming
LITERATE, RESPONSIBLE, and CONTRIBUTING members of society.
PHILOSOPHY
Kauai High School believes that schools are established for students as a
place to develop academically, aesthetically, physically & socially. Thus,
we believe:
1. in a student-centered educational program
2. students are individuals
3. students have different interests
4. students are of different abilities
5. students have different learning styles
6. students learn at different rates.
It is incumbent then that we:
1. provide a wide variety of courses to meet the needs & interests of the
students.
2. provide a variety of teaching strategies
3. respect students as individuals
4. provide opportunities to help them develop academically,
aesthetically, physically, socially & psychologically.
5. provide an atmosphere of ease & rapport among students, teachers, &
administrators.
Further, we:

4. encourage a climate of democratic living with a set of rules for all
to follow.
MISSION
Kauai High School believes in providing a program of study, work, and
service through classroom, co-curricular activities, and job experiences to
enable all students

GENERAL LEARNER OUTCOMES
The following is a list of General Learner Outcomes (GLOs) that are the
goals of standards-based learning in all content areas at our school.
1. SELF-DIRECTED LEARNER: The ability to be responsible for one's own
learning.
2. COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR: The understanding that it is essential for human
beings to work together.
3. COMPLEX THINKER: The ability to be involved in complex thinking and
problem solving.
4. QUALITY PRODUCER: The ability to recognize and produce quality
performance and quality products.
5. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR: The ability to communicate effectively.
6. EFFECTIVE AND ETHICAL USER OF TECHNOLOGY: The ability to use a variety
of technology effectively and ethically.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
In Hawaii, graduation from high school for students in the regular program
requires that students complete a total of 22 credits. Beginning with the
Class of 2010, students must earn 24 credits for a diploma.
The BOE Recognition Diploma is awarded to students with grade point averages
of 3.0 and above who successfully complete additional required coursework.
To students who meet the requirements, the following BOE recognition diploma
is awarded:
Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5
Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.8
Summa Cum Laude with GPA of 3.8+
Valedictorian: 4.0 and higher (cumulative)
The High School Diploma shall be issued to students who have met all
graduation requirements and have cleared all financial obligations.
A Cerfiticate of Completion of an individually prescribed program shall be
issued to specifically indentified, disabled students who complete all the
requirements set by the program.
PROMOTION
Students must earn the following minimum credits to be promoted to:
Grade 10: 5 credits
Grade 11: 10 credits
Grade 12: 15 credits
KHS PRINCIPAL'S LIST/HONOR ROLL
A student at Kauai High School is on the Principal's List if he/she
has a GPA of 4.0 or better without any D's, F's, I's, U's or K's. A
student is on the Honor Roll if he/she has a GPA of 3.5-4.0 without any D's
F's I's, U's or K's (attendance).
