From text: Read Sec. 5-1 p. 158-164, then do p. 164 #1 to 4. INCLUDE THE
QUESTIONS.
DUE: Sept. 15, 2008 (Mon) Remember to put the due date on your HW sheets.
FYI: When reading Sec. 5-1, do not be concerned if you do not
understand any information regarding electron configurations (ex. 1s^2 2s^2
2p^6 3s^1). This information only refers to the position of the electrons
within the different energy levels. The numbers prior to the alphabets "s"
and "p" simply refers to the energy levels. The exponent numbers after the
alphabets simply refer to the number of electrons. For example, look at the
information on page 158 of Sec. 5.1. Near the middle of the page you will
see: [Na] = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^1. The simple meaning of this information is
as follows:
- 2 electrons in the 1st energy level
- a total of 8 electrons in the 2nd energy level
- 1 electron on the 3rd energy level.

Do the following:
1. Draw formula units or each of the ionic compounds listed below:
- lithium oxide
- beryllium sulfide
- magnesium fluoride
- calcium phosphide
Your drawing should contain:
- A rectangular box with a "0" written in the upper right corner to
signify the net electric charge of the formula unit.
- Circle diagrams that represent the ions of the formula unit.
The chemical symbols and the electric charge of the ions should be
written in the cirle diagrams.
- Write the chemical formula for the formula unit.
Beneath each drawing, calculate the MM of the ionic compound. Write your
calculations in the manner shown in class.
2. Show thorough dimensional analysis calculations for the following:
a. 84 g of lithium oxide --> ? mol of lithium oxide
b. 0.67 mol of magnesium fluoride --> ? g of magnesium fluoride
c. 1.22 x 10^23 formula units of beryllium sulfide --> ? mol of
beryllium sulfide
d. 25 g of calcium phosphide --> ? number of phosphide anions

- the number of e- that the ion gains or loses
- the charge of the ion.
