about bridges. How long is the longest bridge in the world? Would your
bridge be stronger if you used toothpicks instead of index cards? Why? What
do some of the famous bridges in the world look like? Answer these
questions on a paper to turn in first thing Tuesday morning.

Go to http://www.nevis.columbia.edu/cosmic_rays and download the PDF
booklet by clicking on "Cosmic Extremes" under Brochure on Cosmic Rays on
the right of the page. Read the booklet and answer these three questions to
turn in:
1. What are "cosmic rays" and where do they come from?
2. Name three ways "cosmic rays" are detected.
3. What is a photomultiplier tube and how does it work?
This assignment is important so we can use the cosmic ray detector in our
classroom this week!
