PAST JOURNALS:

10/13 - Read the link on the symbolism in the $1 bill.  Write an 8-10 
sentence summary and a 5 sentence response/opinion.

EXTRA CREDIT - Go to The Merriam Webster Dictionary on the Links page.  Look 
up the definitions for "tragic" and "hero".  Also include your own defintion, 
if it differs from the dictionary's.  John Proctor is considered the "tragic 
hero" of "The Crucible".  What is a tragic hero and do you agree with this 
interpretaion of Proctor?  What do you think are heroic qualities?  Do you 
think Proctor was a hero? How are you a hero in your own life and who is a 
hero to you?  This is a graded journal assignemnt.  1 1/2 - 2 pages. Double 
spaced.  DUE 10/02.


09/23 - Group Journal.  In your table groups, read over Cotton Mather's "from 
the Wonders of the Invisible World" (see Handouts).  Do the activity.  Turn 
in one paper for your group.  This is a graded assignment.

09/22 - Read the link on the decline of penminship in school and respond.  
Your response should include an 8-10 sentence summary and a 5 sentence 
personal opinion/response.   In addition: Word of the Day: Slough (verb).  
Define in your own words and use in a sentence.

09/16 - Read through the handout on Historical Inaccuracies.  List 5 additons 
or omissions that you feel most significantly change the plot (and your 
understanding/interpretation/reading of the play). Why and how do these 
changes affect your interpretation?  Why do you think these changes were 
made?  Then, in you table groups, discuss the choices and decide on one that 
seems most significant. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.  
Have a back-up choice, as no two groups may offer up the same answer.  This 
is a graded assignment.

09/14 - Look under Handouts for your jounral today.  AND add the word of the 
day:  futurity.  Give the part of speech/etymology, define in your own words, 
and use in a sentence.

09/09 - Read the provided link and write a summary of the symbolism of the 
number 9.  What are your feelings? Do you believe in numerology?  What is 
your lucky number?  Then, look up your birth number - what is that number?
Word of the day: irenic.  Give the definition in your own words, part of 
speech, and use in YOUR OWN sentence.

09/01 - Read through the links (see Links)to learn about the "real" 
Pocahontas.  Using the info from the links, write 20 sentences (list OK) of 
fascinating facts you discover. Vary your sentences - don't start with 
Pocahontas for every sentence!

Word of the day: daedal.  Give the part of speech, define in your own words, 
and use in a sentence.

08/31 - If you could have any superhuman ability, what would you have and 
why?  (Where would you go? What would you do?)  10 sentences.
Word of the day:  defile.  Give the part of speech, and definition in your 
own words.  Use in a sentence.


08/27 -  Discover the real Squanto and his story.  Read through the provided 
links and write 15 facts you discover. 
Word of the day:  proffer.  Go to Merriam-Webster's on-line dictionary and 
look up the word and complete the following: Define it with part of speech - 
giving the modern definition and the etymology of the word (what language is 
it based on and what does it literally translate to?); use it in your own 
sentence.

08/26 - First, answer the following questions:  How do you think you learn 
best?  What are your best study habits?  What are your worst study habits?  
Then, take the Learning Styles Quiz (see links).  Write a response to the 
quiz - what are the results and do you agree/disagree with the results? 
Second:  word of the day: empyreal.  Go to Merriam-Webster's on-line 
dictionary and look up the word and complete the following: Define it - 
giving the modern definition and the etymology of the word (what language is 
it based on and what does it literally translate to?); use it in your own 
sentence.

08/19 - If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?  8 sent.
