Dear Parents,
Some sixth graders are experiencing difficulty with certain mathematical
concepts such as decimals, fractions and percentages. This week, I have
given a quiz on these concepts, which we practiced very often during classes
and found an alarmingly high amount of failing grades. I talked to the
students about it, corrected the quiz with them and instructed them that a
make up quiz would be given the next day (today: Wed. Jan 28). This quiz had
the very same questions as yesterday's, and in the same order. Only the
numbers in the problems were changed.
I am sending over the copies of both quizzes today for you to go over them
and talk to your sons and daughters about. Please sign the test sheets and
have them returned the next day.
Unfortunately, some of my students are currently looking at a failing math
grade in the third quarter progress report.
In other news: The Mazapan PTA is sponsoring a movie activity this Friday,
January 30th at the Premiere movie theater. The Movie "Corazon de Tinta"
(Inkheart) will be shown at 4:00 and tickets are Lps. 60. Proceeds from this
activity will be used to continue funding the construction of our new
cafeteria building.
Speaking of the cafeteria building, we now are asking parents and students
alike to help fund the construction of this much-needed facility. Anyone who
wishes can "buy a brick" for Lps. each. Your sons and daughters will explain
what the activity consists of.
And last, but certainly not least. Your sons and daughters must have told
you of the various afterschool activities they can now engage in as part of
our afterschool activity clubs. I am responsible for a club called "Music
Appreciation club", whose purpose is to tell students about artists people
don't have much of a chance to hear on the radio, artists such as Elvis
Presley, the Beatles, and many others.
IN THIS WEEK'S MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB, WE WILL BE SOWING THE MOVIE "A HARD
DAY'S NIGHT" STARRING THE BEATLES. Filmed in 1964, when they already were
elevated to superstar status, the Beatles run from screaming fans, show off
their trademark sense of humor in a host of situations such as press
conferences and, of course, perform all the songs from the album that shares
its name with that of the movie. The movie is also considered the first
example of we call today the music video, as certain images and techniques
used to film the Beatles back then are still used today. Do come and watch a
piece of history with us. Admission is free.
