100 point project DUE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
In order to study the continent of Africa more in depth each student will be
researching one country in Africa. You will be presenting this in front of
the class on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH. Each project should take at least 5
minutes but no more than 10 minutes. Remember to practice at home before
presenting!!
When you are completing your research you should be looking for information
on the following:
1. General Information – maps, major cities, flag, demographics,
geography
2. Travel – Where are the places to visit? What are some activities?
3. Health – What is the general health of the country? Birth rates,
death rates? Disease?
4. War – Are they at war now? In the past? With who? Why?
5. Economy – What is the economy like? Good, bad? What do they
produce?
It is recommended that you use a poster board to display all your
information. However if you would like to use something else make sure you
ask Mr. Pethan before next week. You will be graded on the following:
1. Presentation (poster, time spent on project)
2. Information (well researched and in depth)
3. Time (were you able to fill the whole time amount)
4. Organization (effectiveness of speech, prepreation)

Attention Parents!!! Reminder about the book order due this FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 5th. Please bring in all money then so we can place the book
order.

It is very important students have a separate notebook for each class. A
large portion of their grade is dependent on them turning in a notebook for
verification of completed homework.

I am looking forward to the 2008-2009 school year and want to welcome you to
my classes. This year will be very exciting for you student as they move
out of the elementary and into the middle school. This is a very pivotal
year for all students to make advances toward academic excellence.
In the seventh grade English class will include the study of various short
stories, essays, articles and books. We will be focusing on reading
comprehension, literal analysis, vocabulary building and using correct
grammar structure to effectively communicate in writing. The Social Studies
component begins with geography and then an examination into the ancient
civilizations.
In eighth grade Social Studies we will continue to explore the world through
careful examination of the world and the different regions. We will be
combining the book and other first hand sources to help stimulate
conversation and discussion about the world. In English we will be
practicing correct grammar as well as reinforcing reading comprehension
through various sources.
In my classroom I expect all students come to school ready to learn. I need
full cooperation and participation from all students in order to concentrate
fully on academics and not on behavior. If a student is misbehaving I will
follow with a warning and then a referral. I expect all homework to be done
on time and late assignments will be given no credit. My tests and quizzes
will be announced giving students ample time to prepare, however a few may
be pop quizzes. My homework for the week will be posted on my teacher
website as well as in my room. If a student is struggling with a concept I
plan to make time after school for additional help if needed or requested.
Above all I want the students to feel safe and comfortable in my class but
still understand they are in school to learn first and foremost. I will
expect a lot from your child and I expect a lot of myself to be the best
teacher. This will be a great school year and I look forward to being a
part of your child’s education.
