Please contact Keota Community Schools anytime your child is unable to attend school by 9:00 a.m. Elementary (641)636-2323, High School (641)636-3491. ATTENTION: Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Ticks, and Mushrooms OH MY !!!! Please be on the lookout for these things this Spring. We have had several ticks trying to attend our school. Now that the weather is getting nice, kids are enjoying the outdoors more and more. Here are some reminders from the CDC to help keep kids safe while playing this spring and summer: SUNSCREEN Remember to apply sunscreen when you send your children out. The sun's UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. Put on sunscreen before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy or cool days. Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection. Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck. Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Research shows that most skin cancers can be prevented if people are protected from UV light. PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD! PREVENTING INJURY Spring and summer are also another time when children are more prone to head injury due to the increase in activities they are involved in. Encourage your child to wear a helmet while riding his or her bicycle, scooter, skateboard or roller skates, playing baseball or riding horseback. If your child does fall and bump his or her head, they could be at risk for having a concussion or brain injury. Here are some signs and symptoms that could indicate your child has a concussion: Feeling tired or listless Being irritable or cranky Changes in the way the child plays Changes in performance at school Lack of interest in favorite toys or activities Loss of new skills, such as toilet training Loss of balance, unsteady walking Vomiting Headaches or neck pain that won’t go away Trouble with such mental tasks as remembering, concentrating, or decision- making If you notice any of these symptoms after a fall, contact your physician immediately. (this information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention webside www.cdc.gov) PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK YOUR CHILD WEEKLY FOR HEAD LICE To learn more about head lice and how to treat visit the Iowa Dept. of Public Health web site under general health links on my web page and type in head lice. Please keep students home 24 hrs. after fever subsides WITH OUT FEVER REDUCING MEDICATION or after vomiting.
