7th and 8th: How often should I check this website?
Parents are asked to check this website weekly, preferably on Sunday
afternoons for updates. In addition, please check snapgrades.net for updated
grade information.
Students are asked to check Sundays, as well, but also nightly if they are
unsure as to what homework has been assigned.
7th and 8th: When are conferences available with Mrs. Hartman?
Virtually any Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday after school during the school
year. I have an "open door" policy, and am available by appointment should
parents or student have any concerns.
7th and 8th: What's the best way to contact Mrs. Hartman?
By email to my Genesis Preparatory Academy email: rhartman@genesisprep.org
7th: How is middle school different from sixth grade?
Here are some things that will be different:
--Students will have several different teachers for classes that run between
40 and 60 minutes each. They will generally move as a group from class to
class, with the exception of elective classes in which they will spread out
according to
their interest.
--Homework is given from a variety of teachers, so completing a daily planner
is a must. Copies of the daily planners are available on this website under
"Optional Documents". Copies are also available in the classroom. Students
will complete a planner before leaving each school day.
--7th graders are expected to be more independent and responsible for studying
and completion of school work than in elementary school. However, Mrs. Hartman
is available after school and by email all through the school year for assistance.
--7th graders read, read, read literature over the course of the school year.
We will read together 6-8 novels and complete novel units for each.
Additionally, students will read 20 minutes nightly any parent-approved book.
--7th graders will "travel around the world" in our Geography studies by
completing activities and research packets, and participating in 7 continent
festivals over the course of the school year.
--7th graders will become excellent writers as they participate in a formal,
systematic writing program for which we will have 6-8 Authors' Tea events per
year.
--7th graders are rewarded for excellent citizenship in a quarterly auction
where they can spend their auction tickets on a variety of items :-).
7th: What do I do if I forget to bring home my homework planner?
Seventh graders have 3 ways they can check for homework assignments:
-- the "Homework" section on this website
-- their assigned "Study Buddy" for whom they will receive another student's
name, phone number, and email address (if available) on the first day of school
-- their daily planner
7th: How much homework can 7th graders expect?
Homework includes the completion of incomplete assignments from the school
day, such as Math problem sets. It may also include drafting of essays and
work on Geography packets. Most former 7th graders will say that homework is
less than 90 minutes (including Math)on Monday through Thursday nights. Keep
in mind that we do not have classes on Fridays, so homework may sometimes be
spread out over the weekend. As students progress over the course of the year
and get into a routine, homework time usually gets somewhat shorter.
7th and 8th: Is Mrs. Hartman available after school for homework help?
Yes, until 3:30 Mondays, Tuesday, and Wednesdays.
7th: What is our thematic Geography/Literature program?
As we "travel" around the world, studying one continent at a time for several
weeks, we will also be reading literature that is set on each particular
continent. For example, North America is our first continent, and The Witch of
Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, set in early Colonial America, is
our first novel. Sometimes our writing assignments will tie in, as well. This
way, students will enjoy a multi-dimensional learning experience that relates
to the places and culture(s) of the continent!
7th: What is a Continent Festival?
As we wind down each Geography unit, 7th graders will be participating in an
event in which we will celebrate the culture, music, and food of the
continent. Students will also be sharing their unit projects.
