Absences Add Up!
When I was a child, I took "Perfect Attendance" seriously.  I remember arguing with my family when I had to miss school, even if it was for something "fun".  More recently, Sasha Obama was reported to have stayed behind in Washington D.C. in order to attend school the next day and take an important exam, thus missing her father's final speech as President.  As one blogger commented, "We have no more excuses to miss anything, ever".

Attendance is a form of commitment.  It communicates without words a loud and clear "yes I'm ready to learn, to listen, to participate!"  This leads to Success, academic or otherwise.  It might sound "preach-y", but I can offer a long list of evidence where attendance made all of the difference for a number of my students.

With such fast-paced, busy schedules, absences do add up fast if we are not taking note.  It happens to the best of us.  A doctor's appointment here, an early departure for an out-of-town trip there, a flooded basement, a sick day, a vet visit and presto!... we've missed a bunch of days in a short period of time.  In any setting (work or school), just two absences a month is considered "chronic absenteeism".

Check out AbsencesAddUp.org for more information and strategies to help improve student attendance.    It is very helpful and will directly contribute to your child's success, now and in the future.
