NBC: "The More You Know"
Public Service Announcements
For more than two decades, NBCUniversal's Emmy award-winning "The More You
Know" public service campaign has been raising awareness of the country's most
important social issues and motivating viewers to take action. This year, the
multi-platform campaign focuses on four important topics: diversity,
education, health and the environment.
The biggest talent from across NBCUniversal participated in the campaign this
season, including: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser),
Brian Williams (NBC News), Ken Jeong (Community), Mel B (It's A Scary World),
Matt Bomer (White Collar), Seth Meyers (Saturday Night Live) as well as
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
To keep current on issues of national concern, "The More You Know" relies on
the guidance of a national advisory board consisting of government, community
and education leaders. The board is instrumental in developing effective
messages that address the nation's most pressing social issues.
"The More You Know" is the longest running, most comprehensive network public
service campaign in the media landscape. In 1989, NBC was the first television
network to launch its own public service campaign with an education message
featuring NBC News' Tom Brokaw. The campaign, created in response to the
teacher shortage in the late eighties, was first introduced in an effort to
recruit and retain educators.
NBCUniversal's "The More You Know" has garnered more than forty national
awards including the prestigious Emmy and Peabody Awards.
Since its inception, "The More You Know's" objective has remained the same:
provide viewers with critical information that can improve their lives and the
world we live in.

Senet
Senet was an enormously popular game among the Ancient Egyptians, both for
sheer amusement, and as an allegory of the passage of a soul into eternal life
in the underworld. It faded from popularity only in the 400's A.D., when Roman
rule brought Christianity and senet's religious aspects put it in disfavor.
Only in the past century, through the efforts of fun-loving archaeologists,
has the game been rediscovered. I can attest from experience that it is just
as fun today as it was 5,000 years ago. It's an interesting combination of
luck and skill. I like to think that this "play the hand you're dealt"
mentality contributed to the resiliency that allowed Egyptian culture to
endure for 3,000 years. Click on the link to play a version of Senet now!

Poetry Cram Magazine is a unique way for talented poets to get their work into
the hands of the people as quickly as possible. Each poet selected for
inclusion in the project donates a little money toward the printing of the
book, which then allows us to give the books away, FREE, at literary events.
That way we know that copies of Cram won't sit in a dusty box waiting to be
purchased. Over 3,000 copies of Cram have been given away free so far at such
distinguished Chicago area venues as, The Printers Row Book Fair, The Woodland
Pattern Bookstore, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The AWP Conference, and at
many other venues and events. Because copies of Cram are distributed for free
to those who are interested in poetry, Cram has become one of the most widely
read poetry publications coming out of Chicago today.

Young Writers of America, LLC
In 2008, Young Writers of America was established by a group of teachers for
the sole purpose of providing students with the incredible opportunity of
having their work published. In addition, Young Writers of America proudly
donates all additional proceeds to disadvantaged youth programs across the nation.
As current and former elementary, middle, and high school teachers, we are
looking to generate creativity through the promotion of poetry and short-story
writing. It is genuinely rewarding to help young writers become published
authors. Help us turn these talented students into the superstars of tomorrow!

Free Rice
FreeRice is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Programme.
FreeRice has two goals:
* Provide education to everyone for free.
* Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on this
site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor
country, improving your education can improve your life. It is a great
investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human
beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a
person is eating rice that you helped provide.
