iPals



Thanks to all of those who stopped by our poster session at the Illinois Education & Technology Conference to hear about how we are "Moving Right Along" with technology in second grade at Armstrong School.

A special thank you goes out to presenters Alexis, Ethan, and Mrs. Sosnowski for sharing our iPal adventures and how we are using iPads in the classroom. They did an outstanding job on behalf of all of our students.

What are iPals?

iPals are second grade students from Mrs. Masters' and Miss Sollbergers' classes who have palled up with kindergarten students from Mrs. Zobrist's class. iPals meet with kindergarteners before morning assembly and during second grade recess.  This gives kindergarteners a chance to interact with educational apps in a shared learning environment while second graders gain responsibility in the role of technology mentors.

How are we currently using iPads in the classroom?

Second grade students are able to use iPads in the classroom during workstation/center time and in small group settings.  Students interact with various educational apps, interactive books, and audio books.  What's next?  Mrs. Masters and Miss Sollberger will be working on some ways to get students using iPad for productivity--the creation of multimedia projects using text, pictures, audio, and video.  Second graders will definitely continue "moving right along" with technology.

What about apps?

There are oodles of apps!  The following are apps used with second graders and kindergarteners.  A brief description is provided.  In addition, please see the list of recommended apps that were shared by participants at the IETC.

Kindergarten Apps:

Park Math HD -- Counting, patterns, ordering numbers/objects by size, addition/ subtraction (with objects), number sense
