Below is a consise syllabus of all needed materials and information regarding your Language Arts class this year!

Language Arts: Class Expectations

Daily Materials:
	Silent Reading Book
	Agenda
	Expandable Folder
	Pencil(s)
	Paper (loose-leaf) 
	Pen(s): blue, black, and red
	Binder (will stay in classroom) with 5-8 tab dividers
	Composition notebook (will stay in classroom)

Weekly Agenda:
	Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Focus on reading and related 
skills
o	Daily:
	SSR (15 minutes)
	DOL/Summary (10 minutes)
	Correct DOL (5 minutes)
	Reading focus (remainder of time)
	Non-fiction reading assignments are assigned most Fridays 
        with in-class time given to get started

	Tuesday/Thursday: Focus on grammar, writing, vocabulary
o	Daily:
	SSR (15 minutes)
	DOL/Summary/Journal (20 minutes)
	Greek & Latin (5-10 minutes)
	Working with Words (varies)
	Focus on English related skills (remainder of time)

Homework:
	Time is usually given at the end of the class period to 
work on homework. If assignments are not completed in this time, 
they will go home.  Unless otherwise noted, homework is due the 
next day!!
	In MOST cases, assigned projects are NOT ALLOWED TO BE 
LATE. Considerable class time is usually given to complete these 
and no excuses are allowed for them to be late.
	Late work is immediately docked 50%! 
	All late assignments are due by Friday.
	If you are absent, you are allowed 2 days/per day absent 
to turn in your work.






Grades:
	Updated grades are posted on Tuesdays in the classroom.
	You will need your student ID to find your grades.
Grades are available on eschool (accessible from the district 100 
website)

Rewards & Incentives:
	Rebecca Caudill Reading Program: read all 20 books on the 
list by February and receive a pizza lunch.
	Reading per Quarter: 
o	You will be given a “reading tracking sheet” to record 
the title of each book that you read throughout a quarter. You 
will be awarded 10 points at the end of the quarter for turning 
this sheet into me (even if it’s blank).
o	15 books= 10 points extra credit
o	25 books= 2 free snacks from the Voyager snack cart
o	35 books= lunch out
o	50 books=dinner out

This timeline is tentative and subject to change. Based on 
previous years, this is the general order that specific areas 
have been targeted. Changes may also be made due to ongoing data 
assessment.

Non-fiction: biography/autobiography, organizational patterns
Fiction: Figurative language and genres novel study
Grammar: sentence structure and verbs

Non-fiction: author’s purpose, fact and opinion
Fiction: theme/novel study
Grammar: adjectives, adverbs
Writing: 6-traits




December
Fiction/Non-fiction: cultural fiction
Grammar: conventions/prepositions
Writing: 6-traits

January
Fiction/Non-fiction: poetry elements & novel study
Writing/Grammar: revision strategies and proofreading skills


February
Fiction: oral traditions
Writing/Grammar/Comprehension: ISAT PREP

March
Test taking skills
Reviewing extended response
ISAT Prep

April
Fiction: novel study
Non-Fiction: reading for information
Writing: Begin formal research study/letter writing

May
Fiction: complete final novel study
Non-Fiction: reading for research information
Writing: Formal research project conclusion
