First grade has adopted the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley Mathematics series. Throughout the year, your child will be exposed to patterns, addition & subtraction, geometry, fractions, time, place value, money, measurement, probability, and problem solving. The students will be using a comprehensive workbook, along with various manipulatives corresponding with each unit. The homework program provides opportunities for additional math practice at home. These mandatory homework pages are tied to the lessons that the children have learned in school.
XtraMath
Mastering addition and subtraction facts is a big part of first grade math. In order to be successful with two-digit addition and subtraction in second grade, the children must have their math facts memorized. We are using a web-based program called XtraMath to increase speed and accuracy in arithmetic. In the classroom your child will spend a few minutes each day practicing math on the computer. This program is set up based on your child's' need in mathematics. It starts with addition problems, and your child has to master all of the challenges before they can move on to subtraction. I invite you to use this program at home as well. This will help them advance quicker in the program as well as helping them memorized these facts. Every week this program emails me the class progress for the week, so I can follow every students progress.
**If you don't have Internet at home I would like to suggest also using addition/subtraction flash cards at home as well.

Problem of the Day
Every math lesson begins with "Problem of the Day." Students will be shown a math problem on the overhead and will work either individually or with a partner to solve the problem on their dry-erase boards. We then go over the process to solve it as a class. This routine aids with critical thinking skills, improves problem solving, and helps to keep concepts fresh.
