Meet Mrs. Sterbenz

Background

My name is Alexis Sterbenz, and as you already know... I am your child's first grade teacher!  This will be my tenth year teaching first grade at Big Hollow- wow, does time fly?!  In 2002, I graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana.  GO ILLINI!  Later, I received my Master's in Education from Webster University.  Recently, I completed my ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement in hopes to better help my students who are English language learners.

In 2007 I married my wonderful husband, Eric. He works for the Wheeling Fire Department as a firefighter/paramedic.  Three years ago, Eric and I welcomed Adelyn Rose into our family, and feel so blessed to have had a new baby born this summer, Blakely Claire.  Oh, and of course I can't forget to tell you about Remie, our Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She is looking forward to the upcoming hunting season with my husband!

My teaching style is a hands-on approach of active learning through the use of centers, reading and writing workshops, and math lessons using a variety of manipulatives.  I try to make learning fun!  I teach the children to learn to read strategically, which will help them in future grades.  I believe in a strong home and school connection - by working as a team, we will help your child be the best he/she can be in first grade!  I strive to fulfill a lifelong love for reading and learning in my students.  Most of all I want your child to feel success everyday while developing new and exciting skills.

Thanks for reading about me- I am looking forward to getting to know your family too!  Please feel free to write, call, or email me when ever you have questions or concerns.  We are going to have a great year!
