About Our Classroom

Classroom Expectations and Routines

Students in my classroom are expected to follow all CJHS rules outlined in the handbook, which can be summed up by the following:
  • Show Respect (to yourself, your teachers, your peers, and all materials!)
  • Be Responsible (come to class prepared every day and do your homework on time!)
  • Do the Right Thing (even when no one is watching!)
As students enter math class, they will have a warm-up activity to complete. Whether it is practicing flashcards, taking a timed-test on math facts, or completing review problems, students should be in their seats by the time the bell rings and begin working.

Completing homework on time and studying for tests/quizzes is extremely important for success in math.  Homework is considered late if it is not ready to turn in at the start of class on the day it is due.  Any late assignments will be reduced by 50%.

Students are responsible for collecting any missed work from me if they have been absent.  Students are required to turn in assignments due the day they were gone upon return to school.  Any work assigned while the student was absent will be due the day after the student returns to school (if the student is absent on Tuesday and returns Wednesday, the work will be due Thursday).  Special consideration may be made for students that have been absent for multiple days.

Extra credit will be available at various times throughout the quarter to all students.  Please listen in class for opportunities.

Classroom News
We are well on our way to having our daily routines established for the year!  Students will be working on Check Skills (review) exercises at the beginning of class two days a week (with a quiz over these every couple of weeks), practicing multiplication flashcards two days a week, and taking a multiplication timed test each Friday.  Students will be focusing on improving each of these as the week/year goes on and are responsible for tracking their own progress.  2nd and 3rd hour math classes will be assigned homework on Monday and Wednesday, while 4th and 6th hour Math will be assigned homework on Tuesday and Thursday.  Completing homework on time and being prepared for class are two things that each student should focus on
This month, students in 2nd and 3rd hour math are working on calculating percents to solve problems.  Their assessment for this unit will be problem solving stations rather than a regular paper and pencil test.  Students will be solving percent problems that apply to the real word (discounts, tax, tip, etc.). 4th hour students are working on a measurement and proportions unit (ratios, rates, proportions, etc), while 6th hour is solving one-step algebraic equations.  We will not necessarily follow the math text in order, so please check back here for updates on our current units.
I have implemented a new procedure for students that have missing work as well.  On the first day of the week, any student with missing work from the previous week will be required to report to my room during 5C (my math tutoring time) to get help and finish their missing work.  These students will continue to report to my room during 5C for the remainder of the week or until all missing work from the previous week is completed.  With this procedure in place, students will have at least 4 (and for most weeks 5) opportunities for extra help and to get their work completed.  Any student that does not complete his/her missing work by the end of the week will receive a zero for any incomplete assignments and parents will be notified.  It is important for students to keep up-to-date in math as skills continuously build.

How to Help Your Student be Successful
  • Practice basic math facts with your student regularly (use flashcards, play games, etc)
  • Ensure that your student uses his/her school planner to record assignments everyday
  • Encourage your student to talk to you about what he/she is learning and ask for extra help when needed
  • Establish a homework routine (including a specific time and quiet place for students to complete work, study, and/or read that has necessary supplies available)
  • Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns! I'm excited to partner with you this year to help your student experience success!
