Reading – The reading series taught is Harcourt’s Story Town. This series includes leveled instruction. A new story is presented each week which is accompanied by skills, spelling patterns, grammar, and writing activities. Children participate in whole group instruction, small group instruction, guided reading, partner reading, and independent reading. Reading and spelling tests are given at the end of each week. In addition to the reading series we will do activities and lessons tied to Common Core.
Grammar – Daily Oral Language (DOL) is used in addition to the grammar skills taught in the reading series. Sentences are corrected for punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and verb usage. A DOL test is given weekly to assess skills being taught.
Writing – Writing is taught across the curriculum. Writing activities include journaling, poetry, expository, narrative, and persuasive writing.
Handwriting – We will be using Handwriting Without Tears. Handwriting will be taught each day for approximately fifteen minutes which will include modeling and practice.
Math – The math series used is EnVision. Technology is involved on a daily basis. The concepts are taught by units. Each day’s lesson is followed up with a homework page to reinforce and practice the skills being taught in class. The math series will be supplemented with Common Core math activities to teach the children to be "mathematical thinkers."
Science – Some units we will cover this year are:
Mammals Birds (emphasis on penguins)
Insects (emphasis on butterflies)
Social Studies – Current events and map skills are taught through the use of Weekly Reader. The Harcourt social studies series for second grade focuses on communities.
*Both science and social studies will be integrated into the reading curriculum using informative text.
