Room #16
Week In Review:
Reading and Language Arts:
This week we had an opportunity to read two stories about hippos. One story entitled “The Surprise,” from the book George and Martha dealt with two fictional (fantasy) characters who happen to be hippos. We also read a story from a Ranger Rick magazine about hippos which was non-fiction (real). We are learning how to compare stories through the use of a Story Map – we reviewed the characters, setting and order of events in the story from beginning, middle, and end. We also reviewed word patterns. Vowels found in words that have the letter pattern – consonant, vowel, and consonant (C.V.C.) usually have a short vowel sound. We had fun reviewing synonyms (words that mean the same thing). The children are continuing to practice identifying and writing complete sentences – sentences that include a “Naming” part (answers the question “who”) and “Action” part (answers the question “what”).
Math:
We have almost completed our subtraction chapter. The children are learning about subtraction strategies
That will help the children solve their math problems. Examples of these strategies are: Counting Backwards, Counting Up, Doubles, and using Ten when you have numbers 7,8, or 9. We’ve also been reviewing how subtraction and addition support each other.
Science:
We discussing and learning about frogs and toads within the family of amphibians as we begin learning more about frogs, toads, and their habitats.
Some Points Of Interest:
· Thank you for making sure that your child is completing and returning his/her homework on time. I would appreciate that you continue to “sign off” (initial) your child’s homework as a signal that you looked over the homework. Thank you for your assistance on this matter.
· We are emphasizing writing stories with at least five sentences or more. This can feel like a tall task for some children. Please make sure that your child has some writing materials available at home (pens, pencils, crayons or markers and paper). Encourage your child to sit down and write about an experience that they had or a recent trip that your family took. Similar to any other skill that your child learns, the more practice that she/he has, the more comfortable and improved your child will become with that skills.
That’s it for this week! Have a wonderful weekend.
