Dear Room 3 Families,

Happy Fall! It’s been another great week in Room 3! I am noticing the
students applying new skills in their work. It’s fantastic!
In addition to the Spelling Test on Friday, the students will take a
Dictation Sentences Quiz. The purpose of the quiz is to see if the students
can apply the weekly and previous spelling and word walls words into
sentences. Two sentences will be dictated to the students after the
spelling test. The students will re-peat the sentences verbally with me,
and then write them verbatim. Reversals and capitals are counted wrong if
used incorrectly. Students are encouraged to use the room’s resources to
check their work. This quiz will serve as a portion of their language and
additional spelling grade. Please let me know if you have any questions or
concerns.
We continued to review short a words this week, and practiced the skill
by separating similar words into categories and during group discussions.
Another skill the students learned was comparing and contrasting story
elements. We read the book A Day at School and the students compared a
typical day at Hynes to the school described in the book. Their wonderful
ideas were written in a class Venn-Diagram.
In math, we began Chapter 2, titled Learning Strategies for
Addition. This week, the students explored the concept of addition, used
counters to explore the meaning of addition, used pictures to explore the
meaning of addition, wrote addition sentences using horizontal and vertical
forms, and explored different ways to solve addition problems. Our class is
during a great job!
In Science, we have completed our Apples Unit. On Friday, the
students had an apple tasting. They had the opportunity to taste red,
green, and yellow apples. As a class, we graphed our favorite apple. It was
a fun filled afternoon! Our new unit is the Seasons! Ask your child to
name all 4 for you!

Please make sure your child returns his/her Purple Reading Log every
Monday morning. It is very important to read on a nightly basis as your
child’s reading will improve! Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend, and I look forward to starting another
fabulous week on Monday!
