After winter break we will begin a new theme in our reading program.
It is called “Amazing Animals.” The stories in this theme highlight
different, amazing animals. The stories are “Officer Buckle and
Gloria,” “Ant,” “The Great Ball Game,” “Little Grunt and the Big Egg,”
and “Mighty Dinosaurs.” This new theme begins our second reading book from
the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series for second grade. Our first
selection “Officer Buckle and Gloria” is a charming story about a
police officer and a clever dog named Gloria. “Napville Elementary School’s
students always ignore Officer Buckle’s safety tips, until a police dog
named Gloria accompanies him when he gives safety speeches.” The vocabulary
words are attached to the homework packet. Please review the words with
your child.
I am sending home a Winter Break Homework Packet that I would like
the children to work on. This will keep their skills sharp. These
activities include a book report and some math work.
I am also sending home a fun homework assignment. I want each
student to interview an adult. Students have the entire winter break to
complete it and may need your assistance. Interviews are due by Friday,
January 12th. The assignment directions went home today.
The writing in the Young Author stories is finished. Some of the
illustrations are not complete. I am sending home Young Author stories for
students to complete the illustrations. Please make sure the book stays in
the plastic bag when your child is not working on it. All books are due
back to school on Monday, January 8th. If a book did not come home, then it
is complete.
The students made a "Peace Quilt" for the bulletin board by our
classroom. We discuseed the word "peace" and then created panels for the
board. It is beautiful.
I want to thank Mrs. Odisho for a fun holiday party. The students
enjoyed making the presents and cards for their parents during this past
week. They went home yesterday. School resumes on Monday, January 4th,
2010.
I hope the holiday season and the New Year bring peace, laughter,
and good health to you and your families.
Ms. Sue Mies
