OPEN HOUSE

Dear Parents(s)

Welcome and thank you for attending our Open House.

Science

We are starting science with basic experiments and the metric system that will reinforce the essential concepts of scientific methodology and lab safety.  It is imperative that the students learn and practice safe lab techniques at all times, as we will be using Bunsen burners, chemicals, microscopes and other easily damageable equipment.  If any of the staff feels that your child is unable to work in a safe manner, he or she will not be able to share in the lab experience and will only be allowed to observe the class.  Please take the time to impress the importance of proper lab/classroom behavior upon your child as we have planned a year full of exciting and fun laboratories for everyone!

7th Grade

The main topics this year in science will be Earth science, General Biology, Chemistry, and “Science Olympiad*” activities.  These labs and activities emphasize scientific method, problem-solving, team work and logic skills .The students will also do a project integrating English class with Science and participate in the “Scientist of the Year” project. This is a biography presentation about a scientist and their contributions.

8th Grade

The main topics this year in science will be Geologic Time, Genetics, Physics, The Human body and “Science Olympiad*” activities.  These labs and activities emphasize scientific method, problem-solving, teamwork and logic skills.  The 8th graders will also present a disease they research from the Human Body unit during the spring Science Share.

Science Fair is now a club. If your student is interested we will be working together on science fair before school and during lunch/recess beginning 2nd quarter. They are also eligible to attend the regional science fair in Arlington Heights at ChristianLibertyAcademy in March where they may qualify for the Illinois Junior Academy of Sciences State Science fair in Champaign in May.  Their projects will also be presented during the schools’ Science Share night.

In 7th and 8th grade we are using a series of books called Science Explorers. These books are available for access online to all students. If you do not have internet access at home, we  will be issued brand new text books this year, At the end of the year, students who do not return the books, or return them damaged will be charged $35 to replace them. Please help your student be responsible with their book.

Grading: The grade for our class is based upon participation (both lab and class activities), homework, vocabulary and science questions of the week, organization, quizzes, tests and class work (extra credit is readily available, but cannot affect a grade by more than 3%).  You and your child have access to their grades through Powerschool, which I will update every other week or more as is appropriate.  I will begin the year sending home bi-weekly progress folders with your childs graded work for you to sign and return. Once we reach 4th quarter, the graded papers will then be kept in their accordian folder, so you may check their progress at anytime.

If you have any questions or concerns as the year progresses, please feel free to contact me via e-mail or at ext304.  I look forward to a terrific year!
