GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO, THE RENAISSANCE, AND US!!!

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was a lesser
known painter during the Renaissance.
The majority of his work was simple
portraits of the royalty in Vienna,
where he worked for the King.
But at the same time he also produced
different sets of portraits, that were the
inspiration for our first fourth grade project.
These portraits had the basic outline of a face,
but the features and details were filled with all
sorts of objects. He made portraits filled with
fruits and vegetables, flowers and plants,
books, and even animals!

Fourth Graders are using Arcimboldo's
examples as a reference point when
creating our own figures. Like Arcimboldo,
the simple outline of the figure remains,
but on the inside we are filling our
figures with everything that's great about
being a boy and girl.

The students divided in boys and girls and
worked in groups to first create some ideas
and sketches and then to translate those ideas
into a full size drawing. The students are instructed
to leave as little extra space as possible, filling
up the figure like Arcimboldo did.

The project is one of my favorites and allows
us to change up the classroom format a bit.
Students get great practice cooperating and
working on group decisions.

We also moved the tables and chairs
out of the way, working on the floor,
which allows us better group access and
forces us to move around more.

The finished full-color figures will then be
taped to the bathroom doors, designating
the Boys and Girls Restrooms.

So far the work has been fantastic and I'm
thoroughly impressed with the teamwork
and cooperation going on during class.

Come by and check out our
bathroom door decorations soon!
