PAPER WEAVING!!!!

It's a project that we've done a few times before
at Hillel Torah, but it's great practice for our motor
skills as well as a good vehicle to reinforce some
art basics like Primary and Secondary Colors as well
as Line and Pattern.

Students start will one Primary Color
background, which is folded in half.

Then students use pencils to create different
kinds of lines, which are then cut. Because the
background is folded, and the cuts start from the
folded end, the result when opened is a large
background with several slits cut into the middle.

Students then weave strips of paper in
Secondary Colors, through the background,
making sure not to skip any cuts. The strips
are woven in alternating fashion, until no more
can fit through the background. The students
were also instructed to create a pattern using the strips.

The result is a very colorful and creative
example of simple weaving techniques.

Weaving is a great activity to work on our
motor skills, and also allows us a simple
project to help reinforce some of the basic
Elements of Art.

Several of the finished weavings are currently
on display in the first floor art Gallery, located
near Rabbi Linzer's office. Students worked
hard to create these beautiful pieces of art!
