FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Will the students use their lockers a lot during the day? No, most days the students will drop off their bags and jackets in their lockers before school and may not use them again until the end of the day unless they forgot something or need to put something away. Most of the students belongins will be in their desks just like at the grade school. Their lockers function more like a private coat rack. Will we be informed of homework, projects, and tests? Yes, your child will fill out an assignment sheet each day in his/her agenda. They are given time and told to do this. If they are not, it is their responsibility to do so. Tell them that you will be looking and expect the assignments to be listed everyday. For projects and tests, students are given those advanced dates and should be putting them on the monthly calendar in their agendas. Please check and see if your child is doing so. Should my child have a lot of homework everyday? No, but some students will have homework most nights. It depends how fast of a worker he/she is and what classes have assignments. Because the students are usually given some lesson time to work on assignments, and they usually have a 30 min. studyhall each day, some students may get all of their homework done and may not have to bring much if any home. However, students should read for knowledge and/or fun each night. Doing so will make them a better reader and will encourage them to become lifelong learners. Book projects are due each month, so usually reading some each day is encouraged. What should I do if I fear my child is having problems? Problems could be educational, social, developmental, emotional, or even as a result of a family concern. Please send a note, call the office, or schedule a conference if you are worried about your child. Mrs. Nolan is also available daily for counciling at parent, teacher, or student request. Please let someone know early before any problem gets out of hand. Is 5th grade a hard adjustment for students? Not usually, but once in a while. The fifth graders must deal with a few new situations, mostly learning to adjust to new surroundings and learning to deal with three or more teachers on a daily basis. Each teacher has a different style and some unique rules and requirement. This is a good adjustment for the kids who will have five, six, or even seven different teachers next year. Yes, fifth graders get a recess after lunch, of about 20 minutes. If the weather is poor, the kids will either play in the gym or visit and relax in the commons area. There is no morning recess or afternoon recess this year. Can assignments due the following day be brought home? In almost all cases--yes. Students should be able to show you most of their assignments that are due the following day. On a rare occasion, the teacher may ask that the assignment not go home if it is a project or an unfinished quiz or test. |
