 FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: This page will answer the questions I hear often during class.
  1. What kind of extra credit can I do?
  2. How are my grades calculated?
  3. My student is having trouble with a topic, what should I do?
  4. How can I do well in Chemistry?
  5. What do I do if I was absent?
  6. What if I forgot to do/turn in an assignment or to take a test?
  7. Do I need my book everyday?
--------------------------------------

What kind of extra credit can I do?

First and easiest, this will come from a few things needed for the classroom
(kleenex, paper towel), which I will put on my announcement page when we
need them.

Also, you can find a link on the home page that
says "Chemical Highlighted". I would like you to find an article,
experiment (appopriate for school), invention, or advancement in the
scientific world. Then, show it to me before class, school, or after
school. This needs to be done by Monday Dec. 17 for the second quarter.

Last, you will need to present your findings to the class. If we have the
chemicals and the experiement is safe, I may do the experiment for the
class. Depending on how deep you have gone on your research and how well you
understand what you have found, the extra credit can range from 1pt-10pts.

How are my grades calculated?

Tests and large projects are worth 50%
Labs reports/Quizzes 20%
Homework/small projects 30%

Realize that if you don't do well on your quizzes and/or labs, you would
have around a 80% for the class if you did everything else perfectly.
If you don't do any homework, the best you can do is a 70% if you did
everything else perfectly.

My student is having trouble with a topic, what should I do?

Take a look at my schedule. We can make arrangements for your student to
come in and get help. I am going to try something new this year and if the
students want help at later hours, I am thinking about added tutoring hours
at the New Lenox and Manhattan libraries. Parents please feel free to email
or call me.

How can I do well in Chemistry?

Pay attention in class, take notes, don't miss class, and most important do
many problems and ask questions in and out of class. Make the effort.

What do I do if I was absent?

Look at the calendar on board when you walk in the room. I update it
daily. It will tell you what homework assignment and lecture you have
missed. Next to the calendar will be a folder with the assignments in it.
If we took notes the day you missed, you need to get those notes from
another student before coming to me for tutoring. The assignment is due the
next day.

The next day place your completed assignment in the black bin on my
side desk.

If you missed a test or quiz, you need to take it before/after school not
during class. Missing the next day's information will get you farther
behind. You may take it during your study hall, but you must complete it
during that 25 minutes. You may not take half one day and the other half
the next day.

What if I forgot to do/turn in an assignment or to take a test?

All late assignments will count as a maxium of 50% if completed, but must be
handed in before that chapter's test is taken. If you have taken the test,
I can't give you any credit for that chapter's assignment(s).

If a prolonged absence occurs, you receive as many days as you were out.
Tests must be made up before taking the next chapter's test.

It is your responsiblity to read the calendar and hand in homework.

Do I need my book everyday?

Yes. We will be using it three out the four days in the first week.
You will be responsible for reading through the chapter we are working on.
Test questions will come from the book, notes, worksheets, and lectures.
