Homework
~ We will have homework almost every night in second grade. Please check
your student’s agenda to see what is to be done each night. I do not check
the agendas or require a signature from you. I am including an explanation
of the homework and a tentative schedule of days it will be sent home and
due dates.
Reading – Mandatory 20 minutes of reading every night. On occasion I will
send home books to be read and these DO count towards the 20 min. I expect
an adult to be listening to the reading and ready to help should your child
encounter a difficult word or need help understanding the story. There are
comprehension cards in the front pocket of your student’s FISH. Please use
these to help you discuss what is being read. If at any time something
comes home that is too difficult for your student do not hesitate to read it
to him/her. I encourage you to be reading to your child nightly as your
child will really enjoy this time spent with you.
Math – You will find triangle flashcards located in the front pocket of your
child’s FISH. I have provided these as a convenience; if you have others
please feel free to use these also. Your child should be practicing all
addition and subtraction facts 0-18 daily. The goal is to have them
memorized. In the middle and end of each math chapter I will send home a
QuickCheck. These are due the following day. I encourage you to look over
the paper when finished to check for errors. I will not formally grade this
work; it will be included in the math grade simply as being returned
completed. For this reason I do not mind you giving your student assistance.
Spelling – Your student is required to bring their Spelling Journal home
nightly and complete the work that corresponds to the assigned number. I
will be periodically checking these and the work will be included as part of
the spelling grade. If your student does poorly on a test I will closely
monitor the spelling journal to see that s/he is practicing at home. All
spelling tests will be given on Thursday. The weekly list will be glued
into the spelling journal on the last day of the week. You can also find
the list on our website and in the weekly newsletter.
Poetry Journal – On the last day of the week the students will glue the poem
of the week into their poetry journal. They will then find two classmates
to listen to them read the poem. These classmates will the sign the poem.
Your student will bring his/her poetry journal home and get two more
signatures from people who have listened to the poem. The notebook needs to
be returned on Monday.
Folder Work – I will be sending home folder work starting in several weeks.
The folders cover basic skills and review topics we have covered in class.
These are meant to be a fun review. Please inform me immediately if
something becomes damaged or does not include everything needed to complete
a task. I will look through them quickly as they are returned, but it is
difficult to keep track of all the pieces! These are meant to be fun and
are not graded. Students can earn money to spend at our class store for
returning them. They will operate on a three strikes/you’re out basis.
Strikes include not returning on time, losing pieces, or damaging the folder
in some way. The folders will come home Tuesdays and need to be returned on
Fridays.
