Additional Ideas for Spelling Word Study

Students will be given a list of 12 -14 words every Monday. Students are 
expected to complete four (4) homework assignments on a LOOSE LEAF PAPER, 
stapled, and returned to school every FRIDAY of the week. Students will also 
take a spelling test every FRIDAY.

You may choose any four assignments from the list below!

1. ABC order- Write the words in Alphabetical order
2. Story Words: Write a short story using all the words
3. VC- Write your spelling words in crayon or pen. Write each consonant 
letter in red and each vowel in blue.
4. 3X each- Write each spelling word three times.
5. Vowels- Write each spelling word without its vowels. Replace each vowel 
with a line.
6. Scrambled WoRdS: Write your words with all the letters scrambled up. Then 
ask a parent or sibling to unscramble the words in your notebook. Correct 
that person’s work.
7. Making words: make words out of each word. (Spelling: Spell, pen, pins, 
sing...)
8. Picture words- Draw pictures that help understand the word.
9. Silly sentences: Write ten silly (appropriate) sentences for each word.
10. Hide the words: Draw scenery or one big picture. Hide the words and have 
someone find the words.
11. Practice makes perfect! Have your parents take your practice test of the 
words.
12. Write a letter to a friend or a relative using all the words.
13. Tongue twister using at least ten of the words.
14. Use a dictionary to write a definition for each word.
15. Cut out letters from headlines or ads in newspapers or magazines. Use the 
letters to spell your spelling words. Paste the letters on your homework 
paper.
