Start balancing equations packet pg. pg. 11, 12 Honors Chemistry Guidelines Room 220 Ms. Dorn 2009 – 2010 Text: World of Chemistry: Zumdahl, Zumdahl, DeCoste, 2007 McDougal Littel Hopefully this course will be challenging for you and at the same time teach you a great deal about chemistry in the world around you. This is a THINKING course and simple memorization is insufficient for mastery. Thinking may be more difficult for some then others so our goal should be to allow everyone to be successful at their own level. To be successful in this class daily preparation is essential. Mastering chemistry is a task that is accomplished by doing some practice each day. In the beginning of the class it may seem as if I am talking in a foreign language and essentially I am; the language of Chemistry. Learn Chemistry as you would a foreign language with daily practice. I will structure assignments so that you can get the most out of them. Your job is to do those assignments on time. Getting the best possible education will help you attend some of the strongest colleges and universities, which in turn will give you many more opportunities in life. I will assume that you will always meet your academic responsibilities. I expect your best effort! I do encourage all students to go beyond the minimum expectation of the assignment to stretch your learning capabilities. All students should be able to attain an “A”, “B” or “C” by putting forth their best effort. This is an Honors class and I expect you to treat it as such. You do not need to be threatened with a grade for every assignment as a way to get you to do the assignment. Your work should always be done to the best of your ability and you should be proud to put your name on the work. There is plenty of class time to ask questions and see examples so that you can structure your work the same way. Grading 60% Tests and quizzes 30% labs and practice problems 10% in class participation Everyone will have opportunity for small extra credit assignments, there will be no individual extra credit.
Duties or Student Guidelines Do a small amount of practice each day as Chemistry cannot be learned by cramming at the last minute. 30 minutes is a reasonable expectation for this level. You will be given packets for each unit and guidelines to help you approach mastery of that unit. You will work on that packet each day a small amount at a time to master the material. Homework will not be collected every day, yet as an Honors student I expect that you will keep on on daily practice. Occasionally, I will collect an assignment for a grade. Never compromise your integrity by copying someone else’s work or allowing someone else to copy your work. Better to accept the consequences of an incomplete assignment than to sacrifice your personal integrity or someone else’s. Late work should not happen you will be given ample time to complete the work and if you are practicing on a daily basis there would be no reason for late work. If you are absent the day an assignment is collected please make sure to turn it in at the beginning of the next class period. I have more than 100 students please do not expect me to remind you of your work. You have seven classes to keep track of this should not be a problem. A detailed outline for all reading assigned in the text for each unit is required. These will be outline style and I recommend copying at least one example of each type of problem shown per section of material. As the year progresses your outlining skills should be improving as you learn how to better prepare yourself for tests and quizzes. This is usually collected the day of the unit test and will be worth usually 20 points. For these outlines to be the maximum benefit in preparing you for the tests and quizzes I recommend that you start them on the first day of the unit and do small parts as the information is covered in class. Participate in class by volunteering answers or asking questions for clarification. Prepare for tests as we go through a unit. Get plenty of sleep the night before a test and eat a good breakfast the morning of a test. The brain is a muscle that works best when rested and feed. Extra help group sessions Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 AM, Monday, Wednesday 2:30 PM Individual tutoring Monday, Wednesday, Friday AM Marian Grading Scale is used Attached you will find a tentative schedule of test and quiz dates for the first semester. You will receive the tentative schedule of second semester test and quiz dates at the beginning of the second semester. You will also receive a schedule of text book pages to accompany each unit for the outlines you are assigned. |
