What should I expect from 5th grade?

You should expect to be challenged to learn and to grow in all areas.  Fifth 
grade is a year to learn a lot of new things and to prepare for middle 
school.  You will be required to be RESPONSIBLE!

Do you accept late work?

I will accept late work one day after its orginal due date. However, I will 
drop the final grade by 10%.  After the one day time allowance, the student 
can no longer do the work for credit, but will be required to complete the 
assignment regardless.  ZEROS ARE NOT PERMITTED!

Do you give extra credit?

I generally do not give much extra credit, however, I will give some 
opportunities.  It will usually consist of a challenge to find something out 
by researching a given topic that is being studied.  If one chooses to take 
advantage of the extra credit, it can make quite a difference in a final 
grade.

Do you give homework?

I believe that homework is simply a time extension on any daily work that is 
given.  I very rarely give "homework", but I do give daily work that needs 
to be completed either at school or at home.  If time is used wisely at 
school, homework should only be about 30 minutes-1 hour a day.  Part of this 
time should always be used to review spelling words!

How much time do you require for at-home reading each day?

I give class time to read A.R. and to conference with each child on a 
regular basis.  However, in addition to class time, at least 20 minutes a 
day should be done at home.

What are the consequences for late work?

After an accumulation of three late/incomplete papers in a nine-week period, 
a student will be given an after school detention for each late paper for 
the remainder of the quarter.

What is Friday Frenzy?

Friday Frenzy occurs ever Friday afternoon from 2:20-2:44 with all the 5th
grade classes.  It will consist of either playing outside when it is nice 
weather, or playing games inside with other 5th grade students.  A student 
can participate in Friday Frenzy if they had no late/incomplete work during 
the week, and had no noon detentions or after school detentions.

What if my child is absent?

When students are absent, they are responsible for making up the work. It is 
helpful to plan on someone to get their makeup work for them to bring home. 
Students have the same number of days they are gone to make up work. For 
example, if Jane misses two days of school, she would have two days after 
she returned to school to make up the work. Many of our classroom activities 
cannot be done at home (group work, experiments, in-class games, buddy class 
activities, etc.) so regular attendance is strongly encouraged.

What if my child is going on vacation?

I will provide work ahead of a vacation if I am given at least a one week
notice.  When I provide work ahead of time, the work MUST be turned in on 
the day of arrival or the work will be considered late.  If there is not 
enough notice for me to get work ready, the student must set up a time with 
me to get work that he/she missed while on vacation and discuss a due date 
for all work.

What are the consequences for not following the class rules?

Warning:  name on board
One Check:  noon detention
Two Checks:  after school detention/contact home
Three Checks:  office/after school detention

Do you allow snacks in 5th grade?

Yes, I allow quick, HEALTHY snacks that are not messy.  I allow about ten 
minutes a day for snack time.  Please do not send drinks with your child, 
they can use the drinking fountain!

Do you provide extra help outside of school hours?

Yes, I will help your child outside of school hours if needed.  It is best 
to set up a time with me ahead of time, as I have many meetings throughout 
the week.  I am not able to meet before school as I have morning duty every 
day.
