FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How much homework is assigned each week? I typically assign 40 minutes of homework each evening. There are however, times when students will not receive homework. It is important to check your child's assignment notebook each night and discuss assignments with them. The required 20 minutes of reading each evening is not included in the "typical" 40 minutes. On a final note, unless there is a long term assignment, I do not give homework on the weekends. What is acceptable for 'fruit break'? Students are to bring a healthy snack for our daily fruit break. Some suggestions would be: fresh fruit or vegetables, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, or cereal. How can my child receive extra help with a subject? If your child would like extra help with a subject s/he needs to schedule a time with me. Your child will be given a "School Pass" from me to enter the building on the scheduled date and time. ~ I can be available before school at 7:45 am - In an emergency, please call ahead of time so I know to expect someone. ~ I can also be available some days at recess, from 1:00-1:20 p.m.; with a "Pass". ~ I am also available most days after school until about 4:00 p.m. Your child will need to be picked up at the front office at a pre-arranged time. In addition, the district office has a list of available tutors. If your child has been absent, s/he will need to check with each of his/her teachers to see what has been missed. As stated in the Park View School Handbook on page 7, "...it is the student's responsibility to talk with his/her teachers at an appropriate time." Students have 1 day for each day that they are absent to make up their work. If your child has been out for an extended period of time or if you would like to call to get the assignments, please leave a message at the front office, on my voice mail, or via my e-mail address. Depending on my schedule, homework requests made before 9:30 a.m. may be picked up by a sibling from our class before 3:00 p.m. or at the office after 3:30 p.m. What if I need to get a message to my child? If there is a message that needs to get to your child before the end of the day it is best to call the front office and they can relay the message. There are some days when I do not have time to check the messages on my voice or e-mail before the end of the day, after the students have left. What should I do for my child's birthday? Please feel free to send a small treat for the entire class on your child's birthday or half-birthday. We have 24 students in our class. Please include napkins (or cups, if needed.) Our time is limited. Your child's birthday treat will be passed out during our regular fruit break time. If your child has a summer birthday, please feel free to bring in a treat on your child's "half birthday"! How do I add money to my child's lunch account? When your child's family account has less than $5.00, a reminder is sent home to add money to this account. Lunch money may be added to students' accounts each morning before 8:00 a.m., or you can send a check to school with your child and I will see that it gets to the cafeteria. When your family's lunch account nears a zero balance, the student is informed and parents are notified by phone so that additional money may be placed to the account. Once a negative balance has remained for a number of days, students on that family account may be denied any purchases until a positive balance has been reached. Typically, parents send in money in $20.00 increments. Is the library available before or after school? For students who would like to study, read, or check out books the library generally opens at 7:45 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. Because of meetings or other possible conflicts,it is advisable that students check with library staff to be sure it will be open after school. Please also see Mrs. Heinz's web site from the "Classrooms" link on the Park View Web Site. What before or after school child care programs are available for my child? Childen are not to arrive at school before 8:10 a.m. "Homework Hall" is NOT available for fourth graders. Homework Hall is an adult supervised, quiet study hall for middle school (6th-8th grade) students, held after school from 3:20-4:30 in the library, Monday through Friday. Please contact the front office for other available child care programs at Park View. Is the computer lab available before or after school? Students have access to computers both before school (7:30-8:20 a.m.) with a teacher pass and after school (3:20-4:15 p.m.) unless there is a faculty meeting, early dismissal or scheduled teacher inservice. In those cases, a sign will be posted outside the computer lab informing students of the closure. Please also see Mrs. Cooper's web site from the "Classrooms" link on the Park View Web Site. Late work is always accepted, but there is a grade reduction for the assignment. |
