1. Read, Read, Read: We will read MANY books together this year. After
most books the students will be given a comprehension test to see what they
understood. Many teachers allow the students to use the books we read for
book reports and/or Accelerated Reader points.
2. SRA Reading Kit: (Science Research Associates) Students read short
stories on their own and answer questions. They are also quizzed over reading
skills that will help make them better readers.
3. 3-Minute Reading Tests: Students are given a short passage to read
and answer questions about what they have read.
4. Vocabulary: Students are introduced to vocabulary that is relevant to
stories we are reading.
5. Skills: Students will practice skills that relate to the reading
skills they are learning in the classroom.
6. Games: The students will play a variety of games that will enhance
their reading skills.
7. S.T.A.R.: The students will take the S.T.A.R. (Standardized Test for
Assessment of Reading) reading test quarterly. This is a computer-based
program, which uses vocabulary as an instrument to measure a student’s
reading ability.
