Kaplan SpellRead is a Tier II reading intervention for students specifically
identified through test scores who would most benefit from such a program. It
is a minimum of 60 minutes each school day which is made up of linguistic
foundations (phonemics, spelling, word recognition, word attack;35 minutes),
active reading (oral reading, discussion, comprehension, vocabulary; 19
minutes) and writing connections (daily journal entries about reading material
and other prompts; 6 minutes). This intervention is not an ongoing
curriculum; it is a one-year intervention program which will increase reading
skills.
All Kaplan materials are kept in a central location in the JH and all
activities are completed together (1 staff to 5 students) at school. The JH
is currently serving 15 students, or 3 groups, with the initial implementation
in our district. Staff facilitating Kaplan received a full week of training in
August. All student progress is reported weekly to the Kaplan company by staff
members to assure appropriate achievement and ensure quality control of their
program. Progress reports may also be generated for individual students and
will be shared with students and parents.
