READ TO FEED

Project through Heifer International

We wanted to make a difference this holiday season so we decided to combine our love of reading with our desire to make a change in the world.  My students got family members to donate a penny a minute for the time they spent reading in December.  Our monthly reading goal is always 400 minutes a month so we know we had the potential to raise lots of money.

We read Beatrice's Goat that came in our starter kit from Heifer.  This is a story of a little girl from a village in Africa whose life was changed when her family received a goat from Heifer International.  The goat gave Beatrice's family financial benefits and she even got to attend school for the first time.  In fact this year she is a college graduate and is even beginning work on a master's degree in public service. Best of all when a family accepts an animal from Heifer they agree to share the offspring with other families in their village.  This truly is a gift that keeps on giving for years to come.

My students were so inspired by Beatrice's story that we too set a goal to donate enough money for another family to receive a goat to change their lives too.
I am thrilled to say that we not only raised enough for a goat; we got enough for a hive of bees, a flock of chicks, and a flock of chickens and geese.  The joy on my first graders' faces when we reached these goals is something I won't soon forget.

I can't say enough about this project.  It inspired my students to read more during a busy month but it also opened their eyes to the big wide world out there.  They realized how lucky they are and were anxious to help other children in place far away.  Click on the link above to contact Heifer and recieve the educational starter kit.  No matter the time of year, you and your students can participate in this worthwhile project that will truly teach children that they "can be the change they want to see in the world."
