Project Citizen

Project Citizen

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, we have inherited a government that is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Our right to participate in governing ourselves in order to protect our rights and promote our common welfare carries certain responsibilities. Among these responsibilities are the need to develop the knowledge and skills to participate intelligently and the willingness to promote liberty and justice for all people. Project Citizen is designed to add to students’ knowledge, enhance their skills, and deepen their understanding of how we can all work together to make our communities better. Our goal this year is to build a basketball court for an inner-city school with recycled materials. Students will be working in groups to research, interview, and develop public policy. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish!

Project Citizen Group Updates

Now you can stay up to date with PC at home!

Check out what each group is up to and what they have achieved.

11/12/08

Public Relations: We are designing a contest that will begin after Thanksgiving. The group is currently making posters to explain what the contest is all about. Each class will compete to bring in the most milk jugs and the winner will get to play a game against Miss Gortz's class in the gym. We spoke with Mrs. Banas about the contest.

Research: The research group found out what materials to use for the basketball court (nylon rope versus bamboo rope, Nike Grind, clay courts, and milk jugs). We continue to look for important information about recycling and materials.

Parent / Assistance: We have sent e-mails to volunteer parents and e-mailed our contact at SWALCO to explain our project and how we need help. We hope to hear back soon.

Interview / Printed Sources: Our group has written letters to Dr. Hager, the principal of the Chicago school, our principal, and a representative assistant.

Public Policy: Our group is currently working on reviewing Character Counts, California legislation, and EPA. We will provide an update as soon as possible.
