American Poetry Assignment

Directions: On Friday, you will present your poem. Typed, you must include the poem, a picture of the poet and an outline addressing the topics listed below. Please submit this assignment by Friday morning, so I can make copies for everyone. You will read the poem (with feeling) and present your outline. As you examine each topic, rely primarily on quotes to prove your argument. All quotations must be properly cited. Include source, proper MLA citation, at the bottom of your outline. One poet per person.

What to include in your outline:

1. Picture of your poet

2. Two to Five Interesting facts about the author's life. Don't bore us to death.

3. State the thesis of your poem - may be analytical or argumentative. One sentence only.

4. Your interpretation of poem.

5. Two examples of either figurative language or literary devices and how each enhances the poem's meaning. Beside what is listed on the Poetry Guideline Sheet, you can also include punctuation, style, tone.
6. Cite the line that you feel is most important in grasping the meaning of the poem and explain why.
7. Cite the line you especially like and explain why.
