Mission For The Class

ADVANCED PLACEMENT POLITICAL SCIENCE (848)
Grade: 12 Level III
Prerequisites: 4.50 GPA One Semester
Department Approval
Students work with a teacher in a class in which the teacher serves as
discussion leader, questioner, critic and scholar, helping the members of the
class assume much of the responsibility for their own learning. The American
system of government is examined on a scholarly level. Special emphasis is
placed on the three (3) branches of government at the national and state
level, the Federalist Papers, the gap between political theories and
political behavior, the realities and paradoxes of American elections, and
the role of public opinion in American politics. Students are required to
critically analyze current world issues from political debates, talk-show
analysis, newspapers, magazines, and developing technology resources. A
practical feature of this course is witnessing a trial in the Criminal
Court, attending the LegalIssues Seminar and guest speakers. Students are
strongly encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam in May. This may
earn them college credit or advanced college placement.
