English Department: Summer Assignments |
Honors British Literature III (135)Honors British Literature 135 Dr. Alice Price aprice@rdhs. Summer Assignment Welcome to Honors British Literature. Over the summer you will read one play, Twelfth Night and complete one assignment, which will prepare you for a year of critical thinking and responding in writing to British Literature. We will begin the year by re-reading Twelfth Night, so this assignment is designed to help familiarize you with the play. Please purchase this edition only The Read the play carefully and as you read the text, read the footnotes. This will take some time, so do not leave it until the last week. Annotating: As you read Twelfth Night, make annotations about the lines you feel are most important. Use your own system for annotation. If you find lines puzzling, I’d use a question mark. Writing: Two parts As you read Twelfth Night, also read the footnotes at the bottom of the page. Then go back and write about the two footnotes per scene which helped you understand the text. These may be as simple as vocabulary words, which were explained. You do not have to write a lot, but you do have to identify and explain why these two footnotes helped you. If there are additional helpful footnotes per scene, which you think were particularly insightful, feel free to write about them. Then after you have read the play and the footnotes, read the Introduction, beginning on pages xvii to xcviii. There are six sections in this Introduction. Write about two pages per section. I will collect these pages of analysis, as well as your footnote work on the first day of class. Thank you for your cooperation. Mrs. Price If you have questions, e-mail me at aprice@rdhs.org
