British Literature
Grade: 11
Level: 2
Instructor: Verna Allworth
Course Description:
Students survey the literature of great Britain in
chronological order, fromthe Anglo-Saxon period
through the Twenty-First Century. Genres include the
epic poem, sonnet, Shakespearean drama, essay, novel,
and short story with an emphasis on the historical,
religious, and philosophical influences, which have
shaped Britain's literary heritage. In the study of
literature, students draw inferences from the literal
level of the readings, analyze the figurative level
of poetry and prose, and synthesize and evaluate
literary topics. They develop vocabulary through
contextual clues integrated with literature and
improve composition skills through multi-paragraph
essays and in-class essay assignments.
Opportunities for class discussion, group project,
and dramatization emphasize collaborative
learning. Finally, students conduct on-line research
and deliver oral presentations. Preparation for the
ACT and SAT essay is also provided.
