Catholic Social Teaching

Course Outcomes:

  1. Student will immerse themselves in God's vision of justice and demostrate how to identify the experience of God in the pursuit of justice.
  2. Students will critically examine society according to Gospel values and the criteria of justice presented by the Catholic Church in the long, rich history of Catholic Social Teaching.
  3. Students will understand the importance of action for justice and awaken their own capacity to make the world a better place by working in solidarity with others.

Each student is required to have a 1/2 inch binder which includes 5 sections (Journal, Reflections, Chapter Summary, End of Class Questions, and ETC.)  This binder is to be left in the classroom and will be checked periodically.

Journal Section - each class is begun with a journal question.  Students are expected to complete their journal question within the first 5-8 minutes of class time.  No more than 2 journal entries per page and each entry must include date, question and answer.  Journals are checked before the end of each quarter and are 10% of the quarter grade.  Journal answers are personal opinions with reflection on the materials covered in class when appropriate.

Reflections - reflections will be assigned periodically by the teacher.  Each reflection is to be at least 1/2 a page in length and reflect a greater depth of understanding of the material covered in class that pertain to the given reflection question.  These will be assigned with due dates given and comprise 10% of the quarter grade.  Reflections will be collected and returned and are to be kept in the binder.

Chapter Summaries - most class days, students will be assigned a section from the textbook that they are to read and complete a summary of the material read.  Summaries are to be in outline form and contain the important information of the sections being read.  These will be graded periodically and comprise 20% of the quarter grade.  Completed summaries are to be kept in the binder.

End of Class Questions - most class days, students will be given 1-3 questions that are pertainate to the class material covered in notes that day.  These are to be answered in the binder.  The student should include the date, question and answer in their entry.  These will be graded periodically for accuracy and will comprise 10% of the quarter grade.

Students will be given a few days warning before binders and checked.  Each Chapter Summary is valued at 5 points; each End of Class question date is valued at 2 points each;  reflections are given values when assigned and journal entries are 5 points each.

Exams and other projects will be assigned with each chapter.
