![]() PE IISophomores!! Welcome to the P.E. Department!!! I hope you enjoy the P.E. classes this year. My approach to Physical Education is first to have fun! Then we work on getting fit and learning how to stay fit. We will be involved in lots of different activities, including team sports, team building activities, and fitness activities. You will also be working on First Aid, Nutrition, and learning how to make responsible decisions regarding your health and well being. Your first unit will be Group Dynamics which will include some team building, obstacle courses, Wacky Wednesday Relays, and a mini golf tournament. (Start practicing your putting...) We then move on to a week of fitness activities such as Pilates, Core Strength, Step Aerobics, and BoSU Training. The team sports you will have are Floor Hockey, Flag Football, Badminton, Pickleball, and Weight Training. Sometimes we throw in a few surprise activites as well. We will also have at least one other week of fitness. Every Friday we run a 1/2 mile, then work on first aid, nutrition etc. for the remainder of the period. Once a quarter you will run a full mile. If you are absent or ill on those days you will have 2 days to make up your runs. Your times will be scored and this will constitute your Skill grade (12.5%). Once a quarter you will be given a written test based on the activites of that quarter only. The study guides will be posted on this web site or given to you in class. This will constitute your Written grade (12.5%) During the first week you will be issued a lock (rental fee $1.00), and a locker. Please do not share lockers - there is no need to, and do not share your locker combination with anyone. I will be periodically going through the locker room to make sure locks are locked. Any locker that is not locked will have the contents removed and donated to charity. Regina cannot be responsible for contents in unlocked lockers. If you are an athlete and there are athletic lockers available I will assign one to you while you are in season. There are a limited number of athletic lockers so the Seniors and Juniors will have the first opportunity to rent them. The locker room will be locked during the class periods, and no one will be allowed in unless they are in class or have specific permisson from a faculty member. By now you should have your P.E. uniform. I expect you to wear gym shoes (nothing backless and no "deck shoes"). Socks should be worn also, color of your choice. I also recommend that you keep an old pair of shoes in your locker for those "muddier" days when we are outside. We offer a P.E. uniform sweat suit (not required, but recommended) for those cooler days inside or when we go out for activities. You will be given an opportunity to order one if you wish during the first few weeks of school. This will be the only sweat suit allowed for P.E. class. Preparation for class will make up 25% of your grade. Do not share your uniforms or shoes. Your last name should be printed in marker across the back of your shirt in large enough print to be read from a distance, and your first name over the left pocket or on your sleeve. The remainder of your grade will be the Participation grade (50%). This will be based on your level of participation. Each student earns points for preparation and participation each day, which are totaled up at the end of the quarter. Sometimes extra credit points are offered. This will be explained in more detail during the orientation. Absolutely NO GUM will be allowed in class. This is a safety hazard and will not ever be tolerated. Jewelry should be removed when it presents a hazard and must be locked up in the locker especially during the weight training unit. Never leave anything unsecured. MEDICALS: If you are injured or unable to participate in class a note from your parents is necessary to be excused from class. If your physician requires you to be out for a period of time, depending on the case you may be put in a study hall until you are released by the physician to return to class. If you are able to participate on a limited basis we try to work with your physician or therapist. When you are taken out of class a written report is usually given to the student. If you have asthma, allergies, or some medical condition that requires an inhaler or epi-pen, you must bring it to class daily, especially when we go outside. I will update this periodically, but if you ever have any questions please stop by my office! I usually arrive at school around 6:45 am and stay till at least 3:30. On mornings that I teach Early Bird P.E. you will find me in the gym or in the weight room. Have a great year!!! Mrs. McMillin |
