Typical Day in Writer's  Workshop

Mini  Lesson

10-15 minutes focusing on a particular skill. We will practice that skill and focus very hard on using that skill correctly during writing that day.

Write Time

25-30 minutes when students will have time to write a variety of stories and pieces in their writer's notebook and take it through the wriitng process. It is at this time, that I will conference with various students about what they are writing or doing a final conference before a student may publish.

Share Time

5-7 minutes at the end of writer's workshop when students will share what they have written that day or a particular story they are working on. When we are having share time, students will be able to sit in the author's chair and everyone is listening intently so we can help the author improve their writing. We will think of the word TAG to help us accomplish this.

T- Tell something you like about it

A- Ask a question

G- Give a suggestion for improvement

"Read like a writer, and write like a reader!"

We will work very hard on writing as a process. We will take many pieces of writing through the writing process.

First, we will brainstorm ideas about the topic.

Next, we will fill out a graphic organizer to organize our thoughts.

Then, we will give an oral rehearsal of our story to a friend.

Once that is finished, we will work on writing our drafts.

Once our draft is done, we will complete talking triangle, which will help us revise our papers, with two other classmates.

After that, we will fill out a Have-A-Go sheet and take part in Spelling cirlce with two classmates.

Next, we will self-edit our papers with a red pen checking for mistakes.

Then, we will do Ed it Arrow with a partner.

Finally, we will fill out a conference sheet and we will conference with Miss G .

I know that is a lot, but we will get very good at the writing process this year and it will become very natural!   We will also have a Write-Time Itinerary posted in the class so you can follow along!

**check back soon for pictures to see what writing workshop looks like in our class1!**

When we finish a published piece we will put them in our Writing Portfolio. Our portfolios are on the counter, so that anyone can pick them up and read our stories and published pieces whenever they wish!
