Welcome to Second Grade - Room 103 Seth Whitman Elementary School

Welcome to our website, a place where you can visit all of the important
information about what is going on in our classroom and at school. I hope
you are able to find everything that you need to keep you informed of the
procedures, events, and learning activities for the 2009-2010 school year.

Wow!! This is a very generous class. Many students participated in the food
drive. You wouldn't believe all of the food items that Seth Whitman has
collected for the Boone County Food Pantry.

Miss Gorham will be leaving us very soon. Her student teaching experience
will be over on Tuesday, November 24th. We will all miss her very much.

There is no school on Wednesday, November 25 through Friday, November 27th.
We are off for the Thanksgiving break. I hope you all enjoy the extra time
with your family during the break.

Mark your calendar! All of the second grade and third grade students will be
participating in a Christmas music concert on Wednesday, December 16th,
2009. This concert will be held in the PAC (the Performing Arts Center) at
Belvidere High School. It is at 7 PM. Mrs. Parret does a stupendous job
with this performance every year. Invite the grandparents. They are sure to
enjoy it. More information about this will be sent home as we get closer.

Our class has been very busy lately. Here are a few of the things we have
been working on:

reading: They read a story called Jamaica Louise James. Several of the
students were able to make a text to self connection because they enjoy
drawing just as much as Jamica does. We talked about the author's purpose.
This is the reason why the author wrote the story. All students will be
working on the second theme test next week.

Spelling: All of the words this week either began or ended with a digraph,
which are special word blends such as -ch, -sh, or -th. There will be no
test during the week of Thanksgiving.

Grammar: The students started learning about abbreviations and how to write
them correctly. They worked with abbreviations for the different days of the
week and the months of the year.

Writing: We learned how a personal narrative story is a story where the
author tells about something that has happened in real life. They had to
tell Miss Gorham about something that had happened to them and how they felt
about it.

Math: We continued to work on money. The students will finish up the money
chapter the week after Thanksgiving. Please continue to practice counting
with real coins.

Social Studies: We talked about the history of Thanksgiving and what it
would be like to live as a Pilgrim child.

Computer lab: They learned how to choose a font and how to center the words
using Microsoft Word. They all remembered how to log into the computer lab
here at Seth Whitman! It is so much fun to see their excitement while we are
working in the lab.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am very thankful that I have the
opportunity to teach your child.
