Cyber Safety Tips

 

q       Keep Internet connected computers in open areas and out of the bedrooms.

q       Talk to your kids about their online activities.

q       Know when your children are online

q       Encourage them to come to you when they encounter materials or messages that they are uncomfortable with or are threatening.

q       Do not post or give out personal information, without parent permission

q       “Just because it is on the computer does not mean that it is true!”

q       Teach your children to respect copyright laws.

q       Homework should come before games and socializing

q       Keep passwords or logins secret, and update passwords on a regular basis.

q       Games have ratings for a reason!

 

Email safety tips

q       Use a shared account or have access to the accounts of your children

q       Teach children to not share their email addresses with strangers

q       Set up email filters

q       Downloading Laws – Be Aware!

*Lawsuits are happening.

 

Instant messaging

q       Children may feel safer online, which may allow them to feel free to say things that they would not say face-to-face.

* Talk to them about spreading rumors or gossip

                        * Bullying is even taking place online!

Chat rooms

q       Teach children to not give out their personal information without your knowledge. (and or others)

q       Warn children that chat rooms maybe a place for adults to pretend to be children.

q       Make sure children are taught to respect themselves and others in chat rooms (make sure that they know everyone in the chat room)

q       Supervise children at all times in chat rooms.

q       Most students are not going to chat rooms, but some are.
