1. Netiquette- Using
your manners on the Internet
2. Internet- This is
like a “Mall of websites” where you can access information, communicate,
advertise, buy, and sell using your computer and a modem or cable link
3. Network- A local
neighborhood of computers connected to each other that can communicate with
each other
4. Ethical- Doing
what is right and proper even when no one is looking
5. Plagiarism- Taking
someone else’s work and using it as your own and not giving them credit for it
6. Software
Piracy- Stealing software for profit
7. PC- Personal
Computer
8. CPU- Central
Processing Unit
9. Monitor- The
computer screen
10. Modem- The circuitry that changes the
signals that allows your PC to communicate to the Internet
11. Word Processing- Using a program to
type a document (text).
12. Microsoft Word- A specific word
processing program
13. Mouse- A small device attached to
the computer that you use to maneuver around the desktop.
14. Keyboard- A
rectangular device attached to the computer that has buttons on it.
15. CD-ROM- An
electronic device that allows the user to use CD-ROM’s and CD’s
16. RAM- Random
Access Memory

18. Floppy Disk- A small
portable storage device
19. Icon- A small picture or image on the
computer that a user can “click” on to open an object, folder, or program.
20. Cut & Paste- The process of
moving an object or text from one place
to another.

document/project

document/project into memory
23. Folder- the place/location where
information is stored

The visual style of text

editing/changing items in a document/project
28. Formatting (Disk)- preparing a
disk to be used with a specific program, or computer format (IBM vs. MAC)
29. Desktop- the screen on the monitor
that has the start button and allows you access to your computer files and
programs
30. Toolbar- usually a gray strip of
color, which contains buttons to edit or modify a project.
31. Snail-mail- The mail you get
through your postal service at home
32. E-mail- Electronic Mail
33. Chat Room- A
location on the Internet where you can have one or more conversations through
typing on your keyboard.
34. Cursor- The
blinking line that shows you where text will appear when you type.
35. WWW- World
Wide Web
36. URL- Universal
Resource Locator
37. ISP- Internet
Service Provider
38. Hyperlinks- A cross
reference (either underlined or blue) that takes you to a related document or
location when clicked
39. Forwarding- Taking
E-mail you have received and sending it on to someone else.
40. Attachments- Files or documents
connected to an E-mail.
41. Row- Boxes of information in a
horizontal line
42. Column- Boxes of
information in a vertical line
43. Header/Footer- Printed
information placed in either the top margin or bottom margin of a document,
usually repeated on every page.
44. Data-
Information gathered or compiled in the form of facts, figures, characters, or
words.
45. Spreadsheet- A table
of values and information arranged in rows and columns.
46. Tutorial- A program
that instructs the user of a system or software package by simulating the
capabilities of the system/software.
47. Microsoft
Excel- A specific Spreadsheet program.
48. @ - The
symbol used in E-mail addresses that stands for “at”.
49. ă - The “copyright” symbol.
50. Web Browser- A
program, such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, which allows the user
to access hypertext links to different sites on the WWW.
51. Install- Adding
software or peripherals.
52. Multimedia- A
computer application that combines text, graphics, full-motion video, and/or
sound into an integrated package.
53. Import- To bring
data or a file from one program/system to another.
54. Export- To send
data created in one program to a second program.
55. Text- Data in
the form of words and sentences (not including graphics or charts).
56. Microsoft
Publisher- A specific multimedia publishing program.
57. Search
Engines- A program that allows you to perform searches for data on
the Internet.
58. Home Page- The first
screen containing information that you see when you “enter” the Internet.
59. Cell- One box
or unit for entering information within a spreadsheet.
60. Reload/Refresh- To renew
the image on a display screen.
61. Presentation
Software- Programs that enable you to create a “document” in which
you can visually share an idea.
62. Microsoft
Power Point- A specific presentation program
63. Scanner- A device
that converts images and text printed on paper into digital information that
can be stored and processed as a computer file.
64. Digital
Camera- A photographic device that turns the pictures captured
into digital images to be stored as a computer file.
65. Cite- To quote
by way of authority, or proof.
66. Laser Disc- Optical
disk: one on which programs are recorded for playback on a television.
67. LCD
Projector- (liquid-crystal display) a peripheral that takes digital
information and displays it onto a screen.
68. Gigabytes-
(Abbreviated G or GB) A unit of measurement of computer memory or data storage
capacity equal to 1,024 megabytes.
69. Megabytes- (Abbreviated
MB or meg) A unit of measurement of computer memory or data storage capacity
equal to 1,024 kilobytes.
70. Troubleshooting- To
investigate and brainstorm possible resolutions to a problem then narrow them
down to find the correct solution.
71. Templates- A pattern
or model that is used as a starting point for creating a document.
72. Query- A request
to a database for information.
73. Graphics- The
display and manipulation of pictorial information by computers.
74. Programming- The
process of writing a set of instructions that a computer can understand and
execute.
75. LAN- Local
Area Network
76. Transitional
Effects- In MS Power Point, the changes that occur between each
slide during a presentation.
77. Microsoft
Access- A specific database management system.
78. Database- An organized
collection of information that can be searched, retrieved, changed, and sorted
using a database management system.
79. Http-
(abbreviation for: hypertext transfer protocol) A client-server code used in
the World Wide Web to direct the transfer of data.
80. HTML-
(abbreviation for: hypertext markup language) A coding system or language used
in the World Wide Web to format text and set up hyperlinks between documents.
