PRACTICE TYING SHOES! DRESS FOR WEATHER! Parents, I cannot stress enough the importance of practicing the binder words. We will be breaking up into reading groups shortly after the Christmas break. Please continue to work on word binders even though your child has been tested on the words. The more they see and read them the more fluent they become! January Newsletter Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great break. Things will start to move faster from this point on as I begin to prepare the children for first grade. Reading and writing will be a main focus. Literacy Centers will be added on specific days, probably Wednesday and Friday. These will include a group reading session. We will also begin taking phonetic spelling tests. In Science will begin our Weather Unit. It will include weather watch Wednesdays and breakouts of snow, rain and water cycle, and storms. We will also discuss the Solar System. There are many areas of social studies to cover. These will include Martin Luther King and Chinese New Year. Math will find us measuring things in inches, weight, and capacity. The students will measure me with cubes, use the scales to see which item is heavier, and play with measuring cups, etc in water. We will meet Letters S and I. They will take up most of the month. With Letter S we will make Stone Soup and learn the power of working together and sharing. Letter I will give us impossible inches and a load of new words. He also stresses working together. A new item that will be introduced is Literacy Centers. Up to this point we have had centers that include math, science, literacy, and art. Now we will also have centers that focus on rhyming, word families, sounding out words, word recognition, and group reading. Our schedule for PE may change due to the departure of Ms. Wegryzn so watch for a notice regarding that information. Naptime is no more a part of our day. We will have a shortened rest time after recess but only long enough to quiet them down and give them a break from the new pace. I will read to them during this time on most days and play some quiet music. At the end of this month we will gear up for Catholic Schools Week so watch for more information on this week-long event. It will start on Jan. 30th at the 5:00pm Mass. Please remember to check folders every night. Remember that snacks should be healthy and that proper dress for the weather in required. They should always have their school sweater or sweatshirt to put on in case it is chilly in our room or in one of the “specials” room. Kindergarten Newsletter-December Thanks to everyone for your patience during parent conferences. This will be a very busy month. The children have begun to practice for the All School Advent Program” and we will have some rehearsals that involve going into the church. We will also be discussing Advent in religion along with the birth of Jesus. We will continue to meet new Letter People and practice handwriting. Most of the month of December will focus on the coming of Jesus and the real reason for the season. Even our party will be a birthday party for Jesus! With Mrs. Brink (whom I am most grateful for) now assigned to our room for most of the day we will be able to get on somewhat of a schedule with the word binders. I say this with a little laugh because things never go as planned and something always interrupts us. Word binder practice is very important since after Christmas we will begin reading from books. With that said I will need their binders in school every Wednesday so that testing can be done and new lists sent home for the weekend. Their handwriting skills are improving and I will become pickier about the legibility as the month moves on. We will continue writing sentences using words they know and words that they don’t know. Be on the look-out for notes regarding Santa’s Secret Shop which will include pictures with Santa and St. Nicholas (for a small fee) and the Advent Program. Remember that snacks should be healthy and that proper dress for the weather in required. They should always have their school sweater or sweatshirt to put on in case it is chilly in our room or in one of the “specials” room. At this time I would like to express my gratitude to you all for your support and patience and for allowing me the opportunity to teach your child. These are the greatest gifts that you can give a teacher. As always feel free to contact me at the school number or my email address.
