Adopt-A-Solider

We Called to Serve - Adopt-A-Solider

As students of St. Barbara School, the message and theme for this year, is “we are called to serve.”  In the computer classes, we have embraced this message with the program Adopt-A-Solider. The classes, Kindergarten through 8th grade each have adopted a solider. The students will write letters weekly to their soldier as well as send a care package to their soldier. We could not think of a better way to spread the message, we are called to serve, to those who are already serving our country.

The letters from the children are going to brighten the day for these men and women who are in Iraq. The group that the students are writing to were deployed November 1st and are on a 15 month tour of duty. For many of these soldiers, this is not their first tour, and some are actually on their third.

I have asked the students to write a letter during computer class. However, it does not have to end there. The student may write a letter or draw a picture at home and I will also send them to the soldiers. The program also informed us that the soldiers also love comics from the newspaper, local stories, and jokes from the children and any news from the outside world. We sent our first package of letters out the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and the students were extremely excited.
