Welcome back to another great season! I am so excited to continue working with the 8th graders and eager to meet the 7th graders. We will have a great season of learning and practicing our skills. Below are practice times, policies, and reminders: Upcoming practices: Temporarily - October 1st 5:00-6:30 (will confirm) Games: 9/17 - Queen of Angels ~ 6, 6:45, 7:30 9/23 - Queen of Angels ~ 6, 6:45, 7:30 9/25 - FXW ~ 6:45, 7:30 SJS PLAYING TIME POLICY FOR VOLLEYBALL Volleyball playing time for eligible players (see SJAA By-Laws and SJS Player Agreement for eligibility) will be based on: 1. Practice Attendance 2. Attitude and Work Ethic Paying attention, respectful of coaches, commitment and focus on skill development. 2. Skill Level Is more of a factor in upper grade teams (6th-8th) than in lower grades. 4. Player Position (6-8th grade only) If a particular team member is more adept than others at, for example: setting or serving then he/she may have notably greater playing time than another player. 5. Starting at the 6th grade level coaches have the option to give more playing time to starters or those players performing at a higher level. SJAA ATHLETE - PARENT AGREEMENT 1. Academic Eligibility Required - Student athletes must meet academic eligibility requirements. These requirements are outlined in the SJS Handbook. 2.PLEDGE TO MY TEAM ● I will always encourage and support my teammates ● I will not give out unsolicited advice. I will let my coach do the coaching. ● I will not berate or criticize my teammates. ● If I have a problem with a teammate I will discuss it with my coach. ● Practice As You Play – I will give 100% effort at both practice and games. 3.School and Church Commitments First - Student athletes will satisfy their obligations to their school and church before their athletic commitments. 4.Proper Conduct - Athletes will conduct themselves in a proper manner at all practices and games and follow posted SJS Rules. 5. Gym Rules - All SJS athletes, parents and family members will follow the SJS Rules posted in the school gym. 6. Remember that coaches are volunteers! 7. Playing Time - SJS has a Playing Time Policy. A copy of it will be provided to you at the Parent Meeting and is posted on the school website. If playing time questions arise during the season please review before contacting the coach. If questions remain then it is best for the child to approach the coach and have a brief meeting to discuss. This should occur before or after (not during) practice. Parents should not be involved unless questions persist. 8. Parent-Coach Disputes - Parents and student athletes should never approach a coach with complaints right after or during a game. Wait and schedule a conversation after everyone cools off. Parents/guardians are encouraged to be a positive role model when resolving conflict. Before criticizing the coach, the parents should allow the coach to tell their side of the story. 9.Negative Comments and Conduct Policy If any SJS student athlete is found to have made derogatory or negative remarks to a team mate, another SJS athlete or an opponent about his skills or team performance she/he will get one warning from his coach, the Principal or the AD. If he/she repeats this offense he/she will be suspended from the team (practice and games) for one week. If this behavior continues the player could be suspended from the team for the season. 10. Zero Tolerance for Berating and Criticizing Team Mates Student athletes may not berate, criticize or gesture in a negative manner during practice or play. Expressing disappointment is O.K. but poor tone of voice, rolling eyes or sneers are not O.K. If a player feels tension or frustration with a teammate he/she is encouraged to contact the coach directly and discuss it. 11.School Absences, Practice and Participation in Games If a child is absent due to illness on the day of a practice or game he/she may not participate in that practice/game. Athletes who are sick on a practice day may have the option to suit up for a game later in the week or week-end if they are recovered. Playing time will be up to the coach. 12.Pre-Game Arrival Time - All athletes are expected to be at the location of their match/game 30 minutes beforehand. If a child is not at the gym at that time the coach has the option to keep the child out of the match/game for the first match or quarter. If a child arrives with less than 15 minutes to game/match time the child will not be allowed to play in the first quarter/match unless the delay was due to bad weather or emergency. 13.Game and Practice Attendance All team members are expected at all games and practices unless he/she is "excused ". First Unexcused Absence - If a child is unexcused from a practice or game the child will be ineligible to play in the next game. The child will still be expected to sit on the bench with his teammates during this game (in street clothes) if he wants to stay eligible. Second Unexcused Absence - A child with a second unexcused absence will be ineligible to play in the next two games. To stay eligible the child will be expected to attend both games and sit on the bench with his teammates during the game (in street clothes). Third Unexcused Absence - If a third unexcused absence occurs the child will be ineligible to play in any games the rest of the season but may continue to attend practice. 14. Drop-off/Pick-up On Time - Team members must be on time for practices and games and parents/guardians will arrange for prompt pick-up after all practices and games. Children will not be allowed in the gym for practice before a coach or designated adult arrives to supervise. 15. Athletes Must Remain In Gym - All athletes must remain in the gym during practice and follow instructions given by his/her coach or the adult in charge. 16. Registered Athletes Only - Only registered athletes for the team practicing may be in the gym during practice. 17. Parents May Not Attend Practice - Parents are not allowed in the gym during practice unless they are a registered coach for that team. Parents may arrive 5-10 minutes early to pick up their children from practice but please refrain from interaction with the athletes until practice is over. 18. Enter Gym Belden Door - All athletes will enter and exit practices and games through the Belden Door. The Belden should always remain locked, never propped open. 19. Contact Coaches For Practice and Game Information - Athletes/parents will call their coaches for practice and game information, not the school. 20. Athletes Should Remove All Jewelry during practices and games. Athletes should use fabric headbands or ponytail bands to keep their hair back during games. 21. All Referee Calls Are Final - Spectators and athletes should not attempt to argue with the referee. 22. Spectator Cheering Should Be Positive and Supportive of the teams on the court. Parents/guardians should provide only positive support for their child. 23. Water Only During Practices and Games - Water bottles only are allowed in the gym during practices and games No pop, fruit juice, sports drinks or gum chewing allowed during practice or games. Exceptions must be cleared with the AD. 24. Uniforms - All athletic uniforms are the property of St. Josaphat School: ● Team uniforms are only to be worn during the child’s athletic event. Students may not wear any piece of their uniform outside of game days. Volleyball athletes may keep their t-shirts and wear them as they like after their season is over.
